Austin evacuating, airport closed as flash floods hit Central Texas

Source: Tuscon News Now

(RNN) – Parts of Austin, TX are evacuating to higher ground as quickly rising floodwaters are threatening residents of low-lying areas.

The city of Austin, TX said several shelters have been opened for residents near Onion Creek, which has reached its highest point in recorded history, according to the National Weather Service.

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is closed after the ground floor of air traffic control was flooded by 6 inches of water.

The National Weather Service is reporting that more than 13 inches of rain has fallen since midnight Friday just south of Austin, TX.

The Austin-Travis County EMS is asking anyone whose home has ever flooded in the past to prepare to evacuate.

I'm in San Antonio and we had five inches overnight. We are in good shape compared to some other areas to our immediate west and south - and now Austin to the north.

Everyone - please be safe!

One of my cat foster homes flooded, a coworker flooded, AGAIN. Driveway and roads are washed out, but my house is up high; we'll be fine. And temporarily, the rain has stopped.

You be safe too!

My heart goes out to all of the furr-babies that will be out in this! Plus, with Halloween tomorrow night, I'm concerned. It's not my favorite holiday only because of the sickos out there.

The rain has been coming a spectacular dumps of water....awakened me twice in the night. The wind slammed the rain....scares me since I'm without house insurance...working with two companies and neither can seem to write the policy accurately! All I need is one of my big live oaks tipping over. BUT, I am thankful for the moisture. CA would love it.

during the worst of this storm. We had 2 feet of water over the roads. Wife wanted me to stay home, but I'm out of personal time, and couldn't call in. Made it to work ok. But it was a scary trip.

who made it in to work, but then couldn't get out because the roads were now flooded and closed. Good luck to you. Hope you're not living in Onion Creek. It's raining like it's 2012 again.

More like the William Cannon/Manchaca area. But Stassney and Manchaca was completely flooded. I saw the water and cut through a parking lot and headed west on Stassney to get over to Westgate, then to Mopac.
But people out there have it much worse than I do. Hope everyone stays safe!

Just a bit south of Zilker Park.. Several neighbors have reported 11" of rain as of 2 hours ago. Obviously still raining. Barton Creek is definitely up. Wondering how Shoal Creek is around Lamar.

I'm just holed up here waiting for it all to just go away.

Luckily, my area doesn't flood.

It had horrible flooding from the Blanco river back in May. This time it's Cypress Creek, which flows into the Blanco.
