Republican Senator Jeff Flake Visits Arizona Mosque
Source: NBC news
Republican Senator Jeff Flake visited a mosque in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Friday in an effort to promote unity in the midst of the anti-Muslim rhetoric seen in the wake of recent ISIS-inspired terrorist attacks across the world, and last week's terror attack in San Bernardino, California.
Flake, who said he had never visited a mosque before, spoke for nearly 10 minutes to the crowd of over 300 attendees, giving what he called "a message of solidarity and appreciation for the contributions of the Muslim American community," and working to put some distance between himself and the proposal by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump which would temporarily bar Muslims from entering the United States.
"This was a difficult week in Washington it wasn't so much the legislative calendar as it was the rhetoric that came forth mostly from the presidential campaign," Flake said to the congregation. "That is not in keeping with the values and ideals that have made this country the shining city on the hill that it is."

(40,416 posts)He would be one of the sane Republicans, apparently.
The GOP needs more of them because I cannot think of a time in my 67+ years that a political party scares me to death as it does now.
We don't as much need GOP caucuses and primaries as we need men in white coats and straight jackets carting the whole lot to a rubber room at the funny farm.
Our disagreements on which Democratic candidate pale in comparison.
What does one do when an entire half of ones country goes fucking barking mad?

(3,864 posts)I don't think that half the country supports the lunatics.
I think there is a vast 'middle' (no idea what proportion it is) that is sane.
but that also will not do very much to oppose the lunatics.
kind of like Germany.
The most vicious of that time there, and of this time here, are the loudest.
They are well-organized.
I do not think they represent the country.
However, it may not matter-- if they do not speak up.....

(40,416 posts)My point was that there are quite a few political idiots in the USA. Obviously not literally half.
I stand corrected.
My best to you.

(9,951 posts)I don't much agree with his politics, but when he does something like this, I'll give him the credit he's due.
Flake is pretty far right, but in the mold of Goldwater, he is a decent human being at his core, he's shown this quality on a number of occasions, and they appear genuine.

(24,720 posts)this right wing hypocrite, in all appearances is getting a pass-------------------
He did the following with his mantra of greed and with the fact of his continued concept of what he has and is doing in Arizona.
And then in my humble opinion he goes into a mosque for a photo op----------------is it really genuine , I mean really, is it really genuine.......................... and then he says this............................
"That is not in keeping with the values and ideals that have made this country the shining city on the hill that it is."
Why can't he afford and go and speak to this also to the Indigenous people of Arizona-------------------I mean really.
He hasn't from all indications even step foot on the reservation----------------------------why?

(3,864 posts)I'm not applauding this Senator as being a good guy, but what he did was a good action, and took courage.
Photo op??
Really? People do not do politically unpopular acts (esp. for a Repub) as photo ops.

(24,720 posts)this is Flake's or (Fake's and his allies and his supporters) and there selective bigotry for a photo-op, again he has not afforded one iota of respect to the Indigenous people from the state he is suppose to represent
Flake and McCain are bigots in my opinion and there individual record speaks of this

I ended up getting a hide yesterday after trying to point out nicely that a Bernista was trying to hijack a thread to praise Bernie. I got angry when I next replied in the thread.
Sometimes a hide is worth it, just to say what needs to be said around here.
turbinetree
(24,720 posts)I look at the hide or the don't hide issue is if someone really says something off the wall.
I look at everything in the subject matter like when I was in aviation maintenance area, the FAA did not have a grey area, it wasn't going to happen, either you fixed the aircraft to the manufacturer specs, and per the FAA rules.
Here you have politicians playing both sides of the political fence, and then when a hypocrite of the like of Flakes, or has I call him Fakes, he needs to be challenged, or just like John Thune, and even this court of right wing hypocrites for that matter, he has basically attacked the fundamentals of the Indigenous people in Arizona, and then he walks into a place of religion to make it look he has feelings for religion, whiole his like are trying to impose there values on the entire society -------------------i mean really, what did he do for the Mexicans, the Apache, Chiricahua, for example, he, his in my opinion the epitome of a colonists, look no further than what he did to the Indigneous------------he goes up and had it reinforced by courts in there rulings---------------that is bigotry
Honk----------------------for a politcal revolution it is about the U.S. Supreme court and the entire Congress this election

(24,720 posts)Flake is a hypocrite, right along with McCain and any others on what is called a colonists in my book (History of the Indigenous People) and what that mantra has done to the Indigenous people of this country, which my mother and grandmother are in my blood.
He and McCain and others of this ilk have not afforded in one iota of giving the Indigenous people the same respect in there religion, not once, so for him to go in an give in my opinion a photo op with the acting of concern for one religion while co-oping another is disingenuous to say the least.
The Indigenous people have a right to there religion and there practices , but when you sell out other peoples rights for greed like sacred land to a foreign oligarchy, it has now become political, and he then is a hypocrite and Flake is a hypocrite, in my opinion, and the only "thing" he is doing is to get a photo-op for a political gain
And he should be called out on this hypocrisy, and his bigotry to boot, if he wants to be inclusive to "all" religions then he should have gone to the reservation, and from my research he has not done this
