Guinea declared free of Ebola transmissions

Source: AP

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The World Health Organization has declared the end of Ebola in Guinea, commending the people and the government on the achievement.

The U.N. organization is holding a ceremony Tuesday to mark the step forward in the West African country where the worst Ebola outbreak in history started in December 2013.

Guinea enters 90 days of heightened surveillance. More than 2,500 people have died in Guinea from Ebola. It has killed more than 11,300 people worldwide, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, said this is the first time all three countries have stopped the original chains of transmission. Sierra Leone was declared free from transmissions Nov. 7. Liberia was declared Ebola-free twice, but has entered a third countdown.

On something like this, you never know what would have happened without the response from the world. It is possible that it could have spread across Africa to the degree that AIDS did in the 1980s and 1990s or it could have sputtered out on its own.

At any rate, the world now has a model for rapid response that actually did work. It is sad that the Republicans did use it to get gains in 2014. The take away on that is that they will restart the fear machine on high on something -- no matter how valid -- next fall.

In fact, you could say they tested that in the last few months -- if you look at Gallup, Obama's approval was hurt by Paris and San Bernadino terrorist attacks.

..... but all you heard from CNN, MSNBC, Fox, ABC and so on up to the election was
about "the ebola crisis" and not one word about how the GOP cut the funding for ebola
both here and in Africa and how they blocked Dr. Vivek Murthy* from becoming Surgeon
General for 2 years.
