Laid off Minnesota steelworker to attend State of Union

Source: Twin Cities

By John Myers

HIBBING, Minn. -- Steelworker Dan Hill gave an emotional speech on the Iron Range last week when White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough was in Virginia to hear the plight of Minnesota taconite iron ore industry.

Hill talked about needing fast action from Washington to save the U.S. steel industry and Minnesota mining industry that feeds it -- and he made such an impression with state and federal officials that he's headed to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address next month in Washington.

Hill, of Hibbing, will be the guest of U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar. The Minnesota Democrat said Hill's imploring McDonough to prevent his generation from being the last generation of miners on the Iron Range, was important in the ongoing battle to protect against illegally dumped foreign steel that is undercutting the market for U.S.-made steel.

Hill, a millwright, is one of 400 steelworkers who have been laid off from United Taconite since August because there is no demand for the plant's taconite pellets. Hill said he wants the industry salvaged not just for him, but for his 7-year-old son, Riley, who told his dad recently that he wants to be a miner when he grows up.

40 years. We protested, complained, filed law suits and got absolutely no help from either
party. Bill Clinton came to Weirton, West Virginia and promised us the world. Then after he got in office
we filed complaints about steel dumping and he didn't do squat. "W" he put sanctions on illegally dumped steel then immediately
after GM and other steel users complained they couldn't buy cheap imported steel he started giving waivers to all the products.
Then at the end of "Ws" term he tanked the economy and put the last nail in our coffin. We had nearly 200 years of steel production
in the upper Ohio Valley and now there is not one steel making furnace operating today. We had a brand new electric arc
furnace in Mingo junction, Ohio it operated only 5 years and has sat idol for the last almost 7 years.

Clinton and Obama are both corporate democrats.

When Bernie is elected, he should do much better.

China and other nations can produce and ship product to the USA cheaper then we can make it. Just look at all the steel cities in the USA that are now TRASHED because the steel industry was allow to move overseas. We just need to look at our law makers for these decisions. They know not what they vote for in most cases.

lawmakers didn't know what they voted for. I fear they know exactly what they are voting for and don't give a rat's ass for us.

presidents to get NAFTA and TPP passed. Bush 1 couldn't get enough Democratic votes to pass NAFTA
but Clinton was able to get enough Democrats along with Republicans make it happen. I voted for Ross
Perot and I think he was right about it and still do. THAT GIANT SUCKING SOUND
