Syria peace talks on point of collapse over Kurds

Source: The Telegraph

Turkey "cannot accept" Russian demand that Syrian Kurds join opposition group at talks scheduled for next week

Proposed Syrian peace talks set for next week in Geneva are likely to be cancelled over a row about whether Kurdish groups will be represented among rebel ranks.

Russia is demanding that the PYD, the political arm of the main Kurdish militia fighting in the north-east of the country, be invited to the talks as part of the rebel delegation.

However, that is being adamantly opposed by the opposition and the Turks who say their presence is a “red line”.

“The PYD is not real opposition,” Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish prime minister, said in an interview. He said it would be a “mistake” for the international community to insist they sit with rebels in the talks. “Russia is insisting. They can be there on the regime side, but on the opposition side - no.”

On a side note, why is this country still in NATO?

So basically, Syria, which has been afflicted with 4 and a half years of brutal war, is now given a chance, a CHANCE at peace talks, and Erdogan won't let it happen. Makes perfect sense!!
And at the same time, he's pressuring Europe because he doesn't want to take in any more refugees while he has done nothing to stop the civil war, but in fact, had a great part in fueling it. what thhe fuck...

will be of some use?

the Article makes clear, and then moves on from, the fact that it is both Turkey and 'the opposition' (however the opposition in this context might be...) that decry the involvement of the Kurds.

so, in effect, and in exactly the same way as its been for generations, its the Syrians and the Turks who are forbidding the Kurds having a voice at these peace talks.

the astute might wonder whether 'peace talks' is an appropriate term for a process where theoretical allies - the 'opposition' and the various Kurdish groups - are taking lumps out of each other...
