Iran claims it flew a drone over a US aircraft carrier and snapped ‘precise’ photos

Source: Business Insider

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran flew a surveillance drone over a U.S. aircraft carrier and took "precise" photographs of it as part of an ongoing naval drill, state media reported Friday. The U.S. Navy said an unarmed Iranian drone flew near a French and American carrier earlier this month, but couldn't confirm it was the same incident.

The reported overflight by the unmanned aircraft came after a series of naval incidents between Iran and the U.S. in the greater Persian Gulf, including test rocket fire by the Islamic Republic and its brief capture of American sailors who strayed into its territorial waters.

The U.S. Navy said it didn't open fire as the drone was unarmed and not threatening the ship's safety, but the incident again highlighted that tensions remain between America and Iran in Gulf waters despite their recent diplomatic detente.

The Associated Press could not independently verify the footage, published by Iranian state television and the semi-official Fars news agency, which has close ties to the Revolutionary Guard.

Mạkt image of giant aircraft carrier in Iran for a film magazine created!!!

Or, actually translated into English, this is a movie prop.

The link has actual drone footage from the Iranian overflight. It's really blurry and is still worrisome: if these guys can overfly an aircraft carrier and shoot real-time imagery back to a control station - something the Navy is used to because the Soviets did that shit for years - imagine what they'll be able to do if they can ever upgrade that drone from a 200-yuan digital camera they got off a street cart in Beijing to something halfway decent.

It doesn't make sense. They must know it would not make for a happy United States.

Military commanders flew the drone... high up career military types often like to start trouble for no real reason. I think they feel it gives them justification for their job
