Former First Lady Nancy Reagan Dead at 94

Source: NBC News

Former first lady Nancy Reagan has died, according to a spokeswoman with the Reagan Library. She was 94.

The cause of death was congestive heart failure, according to her rep Joanne Drake. "Mrs. Reagan will be buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, next to her husband, Ronald Wilson Reagan, who died on June 5, 2004," Drake wrote in a statement.

"Prior to the funeral service, there will be an opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects at the Library."

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Reagan asked that contributions be made to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Foundation at www.reaganlibrary.com, Drake said.

I'm not a Mac user (not for many, many years anyway), so I may be remembering that wrong - perhaps it's the 'Command' key that you hold down.

You might also try using two-fingers to click - although that might not work on every MacBook.

Usually Google can get you pretty accurate answers to basic computer questions - and you'll certainly get an answer quicker than on DU, but you might need to sort through more info. I'll add a link to search results for your question:

https://www.google.com/search?q=how+do+I+right+click+on+an+older+MacBook+laptop%3F

Hopefully some Mac user will stop by to correct me of any errors in my distant recollections.

Nancy's strong advocacy for stem cell research gave it a bipartisan legitimacy that was necessary to make it happen, and give political cover for some Republicans to support it.

I just have the feeling the old ways were better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the 1950s -1970s, if there was an alcoholic
at work or on a pro baseball team, the boss took him or her aside, showed
concern, asked what he needs to help, perhaps talked with his family, and
worked to solve the problem. A few unpaid days off, vacation days, etc.

I saw an employee like that once. Long term problem, he'd be dry for months
or years, then one day keeled over at his desk. The company worked with him.
The community showed support.

Now, it's totally different. It's an industry with tests, are they accurate, how
often, law enforcement is involved, it's criminal, they're fired, etc, etc.

Maybe it's a tale of two different eras more than anything.

So, I guess she had a heart, after all.

on edit: That sounded bad. I always thought of her as a mean person, as if that were the only personality she had. Obviously, that's not true of anyone, and Nancy Reagan appears to have softened and "humanized" in her later years. Good for her.

Say what we will she did very well by her husband. I truly believe that she went to great lengths to protect his Alzheimers progression. I think I saw her doing it by feeding him lines during photo shoots at times. Then after they left the White House we knew nothing about how the disease progressed. She did a very good job making sure his legacy is a very good one.

And I certainly had no use for him and his ideology. I think he was a horrible President, especially about the AIDS issue. He embarrassed me every day and I really disliked him, even as a person.

But I have to be truthful about someone who devoted her life to him and to his legacy. Anyone would be very lucky to have such devotion from their spouse regardless of what their ideology is.

But in terms of her being a human being, she seemed to be well-liked and well-respected, even by those who were not supporters of her husband.

Barbara "Quaker Oats Guy" Bush was my great-grandmother's cousin (which once led to an amusing social game in the Lounge one afternoon of trying to determine what exactly is the familial relationship between me and the Shrub...I don't think we ever actually did figure it out.) and I'm going to have nothing nice to say here about that demon when she croaks.

She, along with the rest of her side of the family, treated my great-grandmother, grandmother and her siblings (and half-siblings) like crap because Nanny (my great-grand) married an Arab...then when he was murdered, she remarried a Cree Native American. We've been the bastard line of the Connecticut and Massachusetts Pierces ever since because we're, as once was said to me, "a little beige."

Mar 2016

I have seen some horrible things on Twitter in response to Nancy Reagan's death. Look, I was a child of the 80s. I was born in 78 so Ronald and Nancy Reagan were my first President and First Lady when I came to understand what those things were. This was a time in which I was innocent and untainted by the nastiness of politics. All I knew is that Ronald Reagan was my President and I loved him. Sure, as I have gotten older I see how very disastrous his policies were in an number of areas, but there was still a sense of sadness from me when he passed. In addition, Nancy was a tough lady. No she wasn't on the right side of many issues either, but she adored her Ronnie and I remember crying with her when she broke down at his casket. So yes, on this day I mourn the loss of a First Lady of the United States and hope that she is at peace and reunited with her beloved Ronnie.

Maybe they'll think it fitting to include a little more of her life now that Nancy is gone. I think it is worth the human factor involved.

when she came out in favor of abortion rights, and stem cell research, and allowed herself to be seen arm-in-arm with their worst enemy. The photo in the OP caused a massive case of exploding head syndrome at the time.

Over at freeperville they absolutely blasted her back then; the vitriol was astounding, but not really surprising given the vehemence normally in evidence there.

Today - not a single mention of their previous disdain, though I understand that the moderators have made very strong statements about 'keeping it classy' to prevent all of this 'dirty laundry' from bubbling up again. (I give it a few hours - look for a LOT of deleted messages over there.)

She did have some good points, and, in later life at least, was actually coming around to some reasonable views.

like she was completely enraptured. I thought it helped him publicly. Other candidates spouses were waving to people in the crowd and looking around, really not listening. I always thought other candidate spouses should follow her example and listen to their spouse speak. I could say lots of rude things about the Former First Lady, but strictly speaking as a voting Democrat, I was a little afraid that someone would slip her a cocktail from the Fountain of Youth and we Democrats would be facing a truly formidable Republican presidential candidate this year.

Something so hard for people to maintain.

I always thought that even more than his creativity that one of the great successes of Paul McCartney was that he was able to maintain his relationship with Linda all those years.

Same way with Reagan and Nancy.

I think Reagan was wrong in so many ways, although surprisingly liberal by today's standards on foreign policy. I never cared for Just Say No and I think the widespread drug testing pushed by Reagan opened the door to our privacy being endangered in so may ways. However Nancy was not closed minded in the way the GOP is now.

In the early days when she was First Lady of California some perceived her as shallow, ie when she ordered a lavish Governor's mansion built (that the Reagans never lived in).

But in later years she seemed to grow into the roles that life put before her. After the assassination attempt nearly killed her husband, she championed the Brady Bill to reduce gun violence and Senator Barbara Boxer today credited Mrs Reagan with its passage.

When Reagan got Alzheimer's, she spoke out against the religious right and became an advocate of embryonic stem cell research, which offers hope to cure Alzheimer's and other diseases.

She was actively involved as most former first ladies were not - establishing a role for a strong first lady as a policy advocate. Word has it she urged Reagan to take responsibility for Iran Contra, and helped oust his chief of staff and some cabinet officials. Though initially mocked for focusing on things like redecorating the White House during a recession she later became a champion for veterans' causes and launched her "Just say no" to drugs campaign. She survived breast cancer, death of her mother and Reagan's diagnosis with prostate cancer as well as his assassination attempt - a lot for anyone to shoulder.

But it was in his twilight years that I came to actually admire her -- She barely left his side when he was declining with Alzheimer's, showing any doubters that her devotion to him was real, not mere political opportunism.
