Debbie Wasserman Schultz's Opponent, Tim Canova, Is Denied Access to Democrats' Voter File
Source: The New Times (Broward/Palm Beach)
"{Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz serves as chair of the Democratic National Committee.
As such, she's supposed to support Democratic candidates for office at all levels of government.
Tim Canova, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University who is running against Wasserman Schultz for her seat in Congress, found out that he is blocked from accessing DNC voter data, even though he's a Democrat.
A state party executive told him last Friday that anyone running against an incumbent is not allowed to access that data. A committee spokesperson, Max Steele, confirmed to New Times via email that the Florida Democratic Party does not offer data access "to candidates challenging incumbent members of Floridas Democratic congressional delegation.
This policy has been applied uniformly across the board since 2010. We stand with our incumbent members of Congress and were proud of the job they do representing the people of Florida. The Voter File is proprietary software created and owned by the Democratic National Committee that is maintained and operated by the Florida Democratic Party here in state."Canova, who lives in Hollywood, Florida, announced his run for office in January. He has basically usurped Sanders' platform: Canova claims Wasserman Schultz has been corrupted by corporate donations. He is funding his campaign largely through small donations. If elected, he hopes to reform the nation's largest banks.}"

It is unconscionable, for the Democratic Party of Florida to prevent a candidate from access to voter rolls. I understand endorsement by party officials, but disallowing a candidate voter information that is vital is simply undemocratic!

.so right. She needs to go, but controls the process of her own re-election. How blatantly corrupt can it get?
Right now, all my money is still going to Bernie, but will try to help Canova soon

(860 posts)exclude access to the Democratic party's information to another Democratic candidate whether they are are incumbent or challenger. So long as it is it not from the opposing political party one should have access. Obviously I am no DWS fan. Yes i did contribute to Canova's campaign.

(34,136 posts)That is not included in the publicly available voter info. The Democratic database has been building information on voters since prior to 2008 and has become an important tool for candidates to focus their efforts.
Every Democratic candidate should have access to that information. If the party does not want to share it with every candidate prior to the primaries, then NO candidate should have access before then. After the primaries, the official nominees should have access.
But the implication in this story is that one candidate has access while another does not during the primaries - that is what is unfair.

(3,233 posts)So It's OK for the chairwoman of the Democratic Party to abuse her position for her own gain?
Even Pete Rose never bet against his own team.

There do have to be checks on it. I understand why the party wouldn't want to give access to proprietary software to anybody who files papers. A lot of crazy people run for office. But I don't agree that incumbents should be able to build a wall around it either.

Repeated obstruction.
Here's one story: I couldn't find a single instance of the Dems in NJ denying a fellow Dem access to the NGP database (I'm sure there have been, I just couldn't find a single instance and I really looked). Essentially, they sell their voter data system below market value for roughly 3k. They denied me access, which means if I wanted to buy it straight from NGP it would have been more than 10k. Luckily, my social media supporters made such a commotion about it that the CEO of NationBuilder and the CEO of L2 Voter Mapping stepped in and got me access to L2's system (which is actually better than NGP ;P) for the same price that the state Dems were selling it at.
They are such bullies, it's wild. But, I don't scare easy!

Are you guys being purposely obtuse or did you really not get the point of the OP?

(42,700 posts)I'd have no qualms about the party not giving him access to the same data given to the incumbent. If you don't have a hard and fast rule, you will end up with the party being forced to give assistance to any and all comers, even disrupters. So draw the line at incumbents.

She is a loathsome creature that sullies our Party and Obama has his hands bloody for keeping her. She is responsible for the defeats in 2014 and will be in 2016 if we can't overcome the cheating and the un-democratic "rules".
