Anti-Semitic graffiti found at school following taunting
Source: Houston Chronicle
NEWTON, Mass. (AP) Three incidents of anti-Semitic graffiti have been reported at Newton North High School since a basketball game at which student fans of the opposing team chanted "You killed Jesus."
Catholic Memorial student fans made their chants last Friday knowing Newton North has many Jewish students. Newton North students had taunted students of the all-boys school with chants that some thought were homophobic.
Newton North's interim principal notified parents of the latest incidents in a letter Wednesday.
Superintendent David Fleishman tells The Boston Globe (http://bit.ly/1nR1CvJ ) that police are investigating whether there is a connection between the basketball game and the swastikas found this week, but he said there is no evidence to suggest Catholic Memorial students were involved.

(53,956 posts)It simply makes anti-Semitism "excusable" to some. Personally, it falls into the same category as those who blame Obama for racism and "dividing the country", it conveniently lifts the blame from the perpetrator and places it squarely on the victim (or a representative).

(5,668 posts)and I didn't like my replies I should have put the smiley in. the original reply basically was how can they do that anti Semite shit and still be pro Israel. I'd assume again and thats a mistake. never assume. and I don't need to play out a history lesson here.

(53,956 posts)The written word, especially quick posts, can easily be misread or misconstrued. However, you do bring up an important issue which many seen to not understand, and that is how someone can be anti-Semitic and pro-Israel. The answer is they really aren't pro-Israel, like lefty and myself, they are pro-Armageddon and war. The fact Israel is a Jewish democracy simply compounds the issue, but if Israel were to lose Jerusalem tomorrow, they'd turn on Israel in a flat minute.

(5,668 posts)when he referred to them as pro apartheid. depending on if the stories from Africa are true or not I don't know much about it. the fact remains there's certain issues with Israel I have issues with And certain "lefty" Jews have as well. Especially with the last election. Even had Natalie Portman giddy about voting thinking it was going to be a left wing sweep that is until Bibi bowed to pressure from the ultra right and won re election.
I just made a sarcastic remark and it blew up in my face. So rather defend it. simply went down and well okay because I didn't put the Sarcasm smiley down people misread it. It happens.

(26,060 posts)and only jumped on you because people conflating Israel with all Jews is something I see far too often. Sarcasm is often tough to read on a comment board when you can't read tone of voice or the expression on your face.

(2,983 posts)One of the many reasons I abandoned the Catholic church some years ago, has to do with this kind of idiocy and discrimination. Children are taught the stories in the bible, they are also - more commonly now - taught through television and popular films; "Look! That's Jesus! I mean... it's... err, Mel Gibson, but it's Jesus!"
The stories say that Christ came to be King of the Jews, knowing, beforehand, that he would be put to death. The stories say that he knew he would suffer and be killed, that he came down to do so anyway, to save humankind from their sins. Further, this man (who may or may not have existed) is said to have had some very progressive thoughts and ideas. For instance, when he said, "I say that you should forgive your neighbor seven times seven times..." (the number, in the context in which it was used, was meant to imply an infinite number of times) The whole damn point, it can be argued, is that Christ came for the purpose of dying on that cross. So, if you take the story rather literally and swallow it whole, it could be very well and very rationally argued that Christ killed himself - by knowing the future and actively encouraging it to take place as he knew it would happen. Shit, this goes well beyond my ability to contemplate. For the record, I'm agnostic.
Beyond that - and setting the question of his actual existence aside for the moment.... these students are assholes. I don't care how old they are. I strongly suspect that their parents are also assholes. That kind of despicable garbage they are spewing does not come from any kind of rational... reasonable... decent thought process or ideology. It goes beyond faith. Whatever you may or may not believe, the Jewish people have faced some of the greatest suffering of any people - ever - in the history of the world.
They faced this because evil shits like Hitler made them scapegoats to blame for all the evils of the world - because they were dehumanized by such people, beaten, raped, murdered, treated in such ways that it... to this day, blows my mind that any Nation, any people, any group... could collectively treat people in such a manner.
That is why this is so damned disgusting, coming from a group that supposedly worships a just, kind, loving and forgiving God. From Catholics, of all people! Who ought to know what it's like to be discriminated against - Catholics are the pariahs of the Christian community, they are (much like Jewish people in many instances) blamed for every kind of evil, flaw, fault and sin in the world.
Do more than investigate. Get each of these kids parents in to talk to the church leadership in the area. Have them explain, slowly and very clearly... using small words, just what it is supposed to mean to actually be a Christian, or a Catholic. Then explain to those parents that if that is the kind of example they are setting for their children, they are not just bad Christians, but bad people.
Perhaps the students themselves did this for the shock value, perhaps they thought it was funny... whatever the case, they - AND their families should be ashamed. We should all be ashamed, that any Americans are acting in this manner.
To all my Jewish Brothers and Sisters here and elsewhere - I love you. I am sorry there are so many idiots and assholes you have to deal with - and I, for one, am always on your side against their ignorance and hate and willful stupidity.
