Donald Trump Says He値l List His Top Supreme Court Picks
Source: NY Times
Donald J. Trump on Sunday promised to make public this week a list of five to 10 judges he would nominate to the Supreme Court, seeking to ease concerns among conservatives that he would appoint liberal justices if he is elected president.
...
Saying that he was about to make news, Mr. Trump said the next president would remake the high court. You might have five Supreme Court justices to be picked over the next four years, because we already have one, and youll probably have four more, he said. So you could change the balance of the court very quickly, very easily.
...
So what Im going to do is, Im going to get between five and 10 judges that everybody respects, likes and totally admires, he said, adding that he would guarantee it personally, like we do in the world of business, which we dont like to do too often, but I will guarantee it that those are going to be the first judges that I put up for nomination if I win.,,,
A spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said late Sunday night that Mr. Trump would release the names of those judges sometime this week.
...
Mr. Trump also lamented a report in The New York Times about conservatives looking to field a third-party candidate if he captures the Republican nomination. Theyre plotting against me, he said, adding that if his detractors gambit succeeded, Republican donors should save their money on the presidential race and support candidates for lower offices instead.
Mr. Trump played insult comic at one point: After calling the people in the room fantastic businessmen, he paused, then added: Maybe youre not, because you paid 25,000 bucks to have a picture with me.
Just kidding, he said, amid laughter.
In other seemingly candid moments, Mr. Trump said he frequently brings up his proposal to build a wall on the nations border with Mexico when the energy in a room is lagging and he wants to whip up the crowd. And he ruminated about the millions that have been spent against him in television ads, only to see his numbers go up.
I dont know what the hell is going on in politics, he said.

OK, {spoiler alert}: he was melted down at the end of the movie, but stranger characters have been brought back to life in Hollywood.

(1,178 posts)What a great idea you had! Instead of Donald picking the justices, he could host a reality show. We could have Judge Judy, Wayne LaPierre and Steve Tyler as the judges. The prospective justices give a 30 second speech on a legal topic, do some target shooting and, of course, there must be a swim suit competition. The Nielsen's will be through the roof!

(108,430 posts)Trump has already filled two vacancies and has released lists of potential nominees both in 2016 and earlier in September we have a very good idea as to who is in play. That starts with the finalists who werent picked.
In 2017, when Neil M. Gorsuch was the pick, his fellow finalists were federal judges Thomas Hardiman, William H. Pryor Jr., Diane S. Sykes, Amul R. Thapar and Don R. Willett. Trump personally interviewed three of them: Hardiman, Pryor and Thapar.
In 2018, when Brett M. Kavanaugh was the pick, the finalists were a little less clear. But his top competitors were thought to be Hardiman and two other federal judges: Raymond Kethledge and Amy Coney Barrett.
The fact that Hardiman was in play both times would suggest he might be again. But given the finalists shifted so much from 2017 to 2018, it is possible that will be the case again. It also seems more likely the 2018 finalists would be in play today, given many of the 2017 finalists did not make the cut in 2018.
Hardiman is 55 years old, while Kethledge is 53.
