Gonorrhea 'superbug' spreading; is it headed for U.S.?

Source: Chicago Tribune

A new "superbug" strain of gonorrhea, seemingly resistant to all known antibiotics, could be headed for the United States as the sexually transmitted disease continues its global march.

There have been no known cases within the U.S. so far. But more countries, including Britain, Australia and France, are reporting instances of gonorrhea that are impervious to cephalosporin antibiotics -- the drugs normally used to snuff out the most serious cases.

“We certainly are worried about importation of resistance,” Dr. Gail Bolan, director of the STD Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told The Times on Thursday. "It's time to take these trends seriously."

Nothing like an hour-long dose of pain and guilt (oral hygiene guilt and sexual guilt).

Of all the things you WANT to be very, very concerned about, antibiotics resistance in bacteria is right at the top of the list. Before we had effective antibiotics, death from what we now consider treatable diseases was common. An infected tooth, or a bad cut, would be a potentially life-threatening condition. Without antibiotics, organ transplants are out of the question. Antibiotics have made much of what we consider civilized life possible. People don't realize anymore what it was like to live before penicillin was first introduced.

And the worst thing? Many bacteria can spread their resistance to other, unrelated species of bacteria through the sharing of small DNA packets (plasmids) that float independently inside their cells and are freely released into their environments.

So far there's not a gonorrhea strain that can burn through a condom.

On a second note, I'm waiting to hear from Repubs who think development of a new antibiotic would encourage immorality. I mean it's not like cervical cancer in women for HPV. This is a pain in a guy's dong we're talking about.

but its much less of a problem (comparatively) than it used to be.

Also keep in mind that most of these very drug resistant bacteria come from countries such as the former USSR (Tuberculosis), India, etc. where antibiotics are OTC -- often without even needing a consultation with a pharmacist. The exception is MRSA, which is a real issue and is homegrown -- but probably would exist regardless since it originated in hospitals.
