Brooklyn DA Kenneth Thompson recommends house arrest, no jail time, for ex-NYPD cop Peter Liang

Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson is recommending house arrest, but no jail time for ex-NYPD cop Peter Liang who was convicted of fatally shooting an unarmed man in the stairwell of a housing project.
"Because the incarceration of the defendant is not necessary to protect the public, and because of the unique circumstances of this case, the People do not believe that a prison sentence is warranted," Thompson wrote in a letter to Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun.
Thompson argues that there are mitigating circumstances that favor probation the fact that Liang was a rookie cop with less than a year on the street, that he was patrolling a darkened stairwell to try and keep the residents of the Pink Houses safe, and that there is no evidence that he intended to kill Akai Gurley, 28, who was two floors below.

(3,425 posts)While he may argue that the shooting was accidental, not sure I would believe that but it could be true. What he cannot deny is that instead of giving aid to a dying man, he spent time on the phone trying to talk to a police union person, trying to save his own ass while an innocent man dies.
I know that demonstrations about police brutality often get out of hand but I hope that they shut New York down if this man gets a pass and only gets probation. I know. or at least I like to think that there are some very good decent police in New York but a probation verdict under these circumstances would be disastrous and could end up costing many innocent lives.
