Indiana Governor Signs Restrictive Abortion Bill

Source: New York Times

CHICAGO — Indiana’s governor signed a bill on Thursday that adds broad limits to women’s access to abortions, banning those motivated solely by the mother’s objection to the fetus’s race, gender or disability, and placing new restrictions on doctors.

The law, which passed both chambers of the Republican-controlled General Assembly with large majorities, builds on Indiana’s already restrictive abortion rules, and was cheered by anti-abortion groups that had encouraged Gov. Mike Pence to sign it.

The bill is among several limiting abortion that have passed conservative legislatures in recent years, but the sheer number of restrictions in Indiana’s legislation made it distinct. In addition to holding doctors liable if a woman has an abortion solely because of objections to the fetus’s race, sex or a disability, like Down syndrome, the law restricts fetal tissue donation and requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital or to have an agreement with a doctor who does.

“Seeing them all in one place, that is very striking,” said Dawn Johnsen, an Indiana University law professor who has been an abortion rights advocate. “It’s like the kitchen sink: Everything that isn’t already in the law. And the law is already really restrictive.”

the reason for the procedure is not the state's business.

hasn't the "admitting privileges" BS been shot down already?

This means a mother will be forced to give birth to a child who may have a negative quality of life just because some asshole say so and those same fucking assholes will do everything they can to make sure that the state helps the family as little as possible.

Severe disability is a primary reason women have later term (13-26 weeks) abortions. He is sentencing families to lifelong proverty in many cases.

I think there will be a major backlash once it does.

They prove once again they are pro-fetus only, not pro-life.

Repubs are good at passing laws that obstruct and Dems pass laws that give and improve the life experience.

So sorry for the women (and men) that this will effect, altering their lives by taking away a choice.

Dems - need to vote them out! Replace them and change the law back!

that the child they are expecting has a serious disability that will result in the infant suffering in pain and dying soon after birth, will have NO ALTERNATIVE (in Indiana) but to go through with the pregnancy full term and suffer the pain of watching that baby die is what the GOP is condemning poor parents to by passing this law. Or saddling them to a long life of medical expenses and heartbreak having to take care of that child. Imagine how cruel it would be if a doctor keeps vital information concerning the health of the fetus from the parents until it is born and the parents, expecting a healthy child, are shocked to find out it has a serious disability and that the doctor kept this information a secret for fear the parents would opt for an abortion. Meanwhile, children die of curable conditions and the GOP is all for parents who object to medical treatments based on religious reasons.

Does he realize how expensive caring for down syndrome children, etc. can be? Often, the state has to step in, yet Republicans are supposed to be against welfare. This guy needs to go.
