NU to insure domestic partners

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Leslie Reed

LINCOLN — The University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted 5-3 Friday to adopt “Plus One” benefits extending health insurance coverage to the domestic partners of NU employees.

The vote came after testimony by Stephen Baenziger, a star wheat researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for nearly three decades.

Baenziger appeared dressed in jeans, having come directly from his research fields. As he nears retirement, he said, his focus has been on preparing successors for his research.

Without the new benefits in place, Baenziger said he could not recommend his job to a person who needed health insurance coverage for a loved one. That is why he supports the new benefit, even though it would not apply to him.

Equal to spousal. That's something I've been very proud of.

Why? Because the University will be a good political target to pull funding from over this. Not that I blame anyone but the bigoted anti-gay idiots in this state but I'm just saying. . . . . . .
