US State Dept. apologizes over travel tip for the less attractive

Washington (AFP) - The US Department of State issued an apology after posting a tweet that seemed to proffer travel advice for those whose looks are less than a perfect 10.
"Some have been offended by our earlier tweet and we apologize that it came off negatively," the Bureau of Consular Affairs posted on its Twitter account, after pulling down the offending message.
US media posted screenshots of the tweet, part of a campaign warning those headed overseas on Spring Break, a week-long vacation when US university students famously tend to party, how to stay out of trouble while abroad.
"Not a '10' in the US? Then not a 10 overseas. Beware of being lured into buying expensive drinks or worse--being robbed" the bureau advised on its @TravelGov account.

(16,191 posts)And a scam that men tend to fall victim to more often than women.
Homely person is sitting alone in a bar. Extremely attractive woman approaches him and begins to come on to him. Guy thinks this just became the luckiest night of his life.
If he's really lucky, she's just trying to con him into paying a few hundred bucks for bottle service (though some people have been conned out of THOUSANDS of dollars this way). If he's unlucky, she'll invite him outside to have a little "fun" (wink wink, nudge nudge), where he'll be promptly beaten and robbed by her partners.
The tweet is actually very GOOD advice, but it's phrased very poorly. It's basically a twist on the old "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
On edit:
I should mention that a friend of my daughters fell victim to this in Cozumel last year. He was in a bar when a young woman started hitting on him. She asked him, in English, if he'd buy her a drink, which he agreed to. The woman said something to the bartender in Spanish, who looked at him and said "You paying for drinks?" He said yes. A drink later, she had to "go to the bathroom" and promised to come right back. She never did...she walked out of the bar with the large group of people she'd originally come with.
It turned out that she'd told the bartender that HE would be paying for her groups tab. Because his Spanish sucked and the music was loud, he didn't catch that. When the bartender asked him...he confirmed it without realizing it.
Their bar bill was over $500, which he didn't have. The bartender called the police, who arrested and held him until the following morning when his friends were able to pay the bill. He lost $500 and spent a night in a Mexican jail because he couldn't resist a "10".

(5,400 posts)wherein a bald guy says "I'm no Gavin MacLeod, but I'm not bad looking" or something like that. It was the episode where there was restaurant that only seated attractive people.
Anyway, yeah, they shouldn't have gone there.
Link to a Gavin MacLeod picture so the joke makes sense.
