Panama law firm says data hack was external, files complaint

Source: Reuters

The Panamanian lawyer at the center of a data leak scandal that has embarrassed a clutch of world leaders said on Tuesday his firm was a victim of a hack from outside the company, and has filed a complaint with state prosecutors.

Founding partner Ramon Fonseca said the firm, Mossack Fonseca, which specializes in setting up offshore companies, had broken no laws and that all its operations were legal. Nor had it ever destroyed any documents or helped anyone evade taxes or launder money, he added in an interview with Reuters.

Company emails, extracts of which were published in an investigation by the U.S.-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and other media organizations, were "taken out of context" and misinterpreted, he added.

"We rule out an inside job. This is not a leak. This is a hack," Fonseca, 63, said at the company's headquarters in Panama City's business district. "We have a theory and we are following it," he added, without elaborating.

If this is true then we can hope for more tax havens to be hacked and leaked. I hoping for the Caymans - since the Clintons are so connected to them.

That does not seem credible to me. Wouldn't they have the sense to divide the databases up?

Hmmnmmmm! I wonder about this.

Wouldn't there be firewalls between different parts of the information.

Did they never deal with or hire attorneys who might have a conflict of interest? Did they have all the data on one database and then wall off sections of it for certain attorneys?

Why did they have this kind of sloppy security when they were handling so much money?

Very interesting.

I hear countries that have big tax havens get very little spent on things like infrastructure. It's not like they're taxing people there. Bet they hired cheap IT.

to murder (beaten to death) of one of those wealthy, wealthy Russians who was killed in Washingtondc a month ago.

just my opinion that the information 'leaked' probably wasn't just in that tax haven anymore.

Not anywhere else. Does the law apply to the ruling class ? When we learn the exact extent of their crimes will our justcie Dept, the Justice depots of all the other countries do anything ?will China execute these criminals ? How long can Putin hold on to power ? Will our CIA investigate or are they so complicit that they are obsolete ? Will there be wars as a result ? When a nation like say Greece learns that the reason they are bankrupt is to be found right there in black and white ? The staggering debt Europe suffers ? Who will stand up to the oil companies and the shield who have robbed and murdered so liberally for so long ?
We can't go back, now that we know. That the extraction of wealth is not a conspiracy it's not accidental it's not business as usual. It's stealing and it's real we have the proof and we must now decide do we act or do we stand down and allow the rich to fuck us up our assholes some more ? Will we go ahead and allow our electoral process deteriorate , allow Hillary to continue business as usual ?
I want to remind you that these are the same people who murdered JFK ,his brother and about 1000 other people . These are not nice people. They are arrogant to the extent that they will not even slow their activities down. Won't even consider doing anything like the right thing. They will fight and they will do what ever they think they have to do. If a world war is what they need then get ready to rock because they will get what they want or they will kill us all. Here's the scariest part , in this battle we, the people have no allies. No government has our back. All governments have their backs. Our government is so corrupt, we no longer have it on our side.

John McAfee is running for US president as a member of the Libertarian Party. This is an op-ed he wrote and gave us permission to run.

The hack of Mossack Fonseca, in terms of the certain fallout that will affect many of the wealthiest and most prominent people on the planet, is by far the largest and most damaging cyberattack on record.

I am just one of more than 200,000 people to have downloaded the Panama Papers, a record for hacked documents. It was a gold mine.

The release contained 11.5 million documents chronicling the formation and actions of 214,000 offshore companies along with the names and manipulations of more than 14,000 clients. Among the clients are:

12 heads of state
More than 150 politicians
29 billionaires on the Forbes list
Multiple financiers of terrorism
Nuclear-weapons proliferators
Prominent sports and entertainment figures
Numerous CIA-linked companies
