Glenn Beck signs $100 million radio contract
Source: msnbc.com
Glenn Beck will remain a force in radio for at least five more years. The conservative firebrand has inked a new five-year, $100 million deal with Clear Channel's Premiere Networks. The pact, roughly double the size of the previous five-year deal he signed in 2007, is a vote of confidence for the syndicated "Glenn Beck Program," which regularly lures 10 million listeners a week.
The morning show, behind only to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity's radio programs in typical audience size, is carried by more than 400 stations. Since "The Glenn Beck Program's" official launch in early 2002, Beck has used the mutliple-hour format to peddle all part of the Beck brand, from books to Web shows to comedy events.
The news, first reported by The New York Times, comes about a year after Beck signed off on his popular if ever-controversial Fox News show. In the months since, he has continued to grow his subscription-based Internet-only network, GBTV, which a recent Wall Street Journal article estimated would bring in at least $40 million in revenue this year.

(10,857 posts)I'm guessing that ten million listeners a week is probably the same ten million listeners every week. Maybe the best way to put it is that there are ten million listeners, minimum.
I assume Clear Channel thinks they can sell over $20 million in advertising each year to pay for Beck, which means in turn that advertisers think that they can make over $20 million a year off of the ten million listeners.
Or a minimum of two bucks per listener per year. Call it four cents a week?
I suppose the reverse can work, too. Show me a list of Beck's advertisers and I'll gladly not spend over two bucks on any of them in a year. I'll bet I could divert a shitload more money than that away from those advertisers by identifying which products I use back Beck, and never buying them again.
If I deliberately avoid spending $100 in a year on those advertisers, I've canceled out fifty Beck listeners.
That sounds like something worth doing. Who are his most prominent advertisers?

(26,290 posts)them what to think and why its the fault of (insert political party, race, sex, age, religion) for their own lives sucking or why they cant find a job.
In fact thats how Hitler came to power pre WWII Germany, people liked being told why it was someone elses fault other than their own for the problems in their country.

(26,290 posts)Fear is the driving force in the end and it triggers a flight or fight reflex and in the case of those who follow those like Beck it triggers their fight reflex so they lash out blindly without taking the time to consider the consequences of their actions in the long term.

the right wing smear machine fronting the money to keep this lunatic on the air? I also question the ratings - are they as overblown as Oxy Man?

But like a bad penny he keeps turning up. Time to crank up the boycotts again maybe?

(18 posts)and yet the bastard abandons New York for Texas, like Limbaugh slinking off to Florida, to avoid paying his fair share of taxes. Something needs to be done about this, maybe all taxes should be Federal.

I can't even put this one in words . It's fricken absurd.
I used to listen to some serious shit on short wave when I was barely 40 and really beginning to ask questions. If I had stuck with something like Beck, I'd be fucking nuts and ready for the loon farm.
This is seriously fucked up. The numbers must be stations that play automatically in chain stores and Walmart break rooms.
