Rockefeller calls on coal industry to stop 'scare tactics'

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., Wednesday morning called for an end to "scare tactics" by coal companies and urged West Virginians to face the reality of changes coming to the world's energy industries.
Rockefeller delivered his message in a U.S. Senate floor speech on West Virginia Day, in which he announced he would oppose a Republican resolution aimed at blocking the Obama administration's rules to curb mercury and other toxic air emissions from coal-fired power plants.
"Coal has played an important part in our past and can play an important role in our future, but it will only happen if we face reality," Rockefeller said.
Rockefeller criticized "millions of dollars" in coal industry and political advertising that he said tries to convince West Virginians -- especially coal miners -- that they should "turn back the clock, ignore the present, and block the future."
