Virginia State Police open investigation into inmate's death

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia State Police says it has opened a criminal investigation into the death of a mentally ill inmate at a regional jail last year.

State Police spokeswoman Corrinne Geller said Wednesday that the investigation into Jamycheal Mitchell's August 2015 death is being handled by the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Chesapeake Filed Office.

Mitchell's family filed a lawsuit last month in which other inmates said correctional officials physically abused and withheld food from Mitchell. A medical examiner said Mitchell died of heart failure accompanied by severe weight loss.

In a brief filed this week, attorney Mark Krudys said the inmates named as witnesses in the lawsuit are being threatened and abused by jail officials.
