Sarah Silverman target of anti-Semitic rant by ex-reality TV star Tila Tequila
Source: Jerusalem Post
Tequila accused Sarah Silverman and the Jews of killing Jesus before saying the comedian was next on a celebrity sacrifice list.
Jesus will come back too just dont tell the Jews about it, Twitter user Kaiser Poopfist I tweeted at Tequila.
As Raw Story reported, Tequila continued her rant by saying she would take vengeance on Silverman. This is not the first time Tequila has expressed anti-Semitic views. In April, she claimed that she was the reincarnation of Adolf Hitler. Last year she was kicked off of the show Celebrity Big Brother for wearing a Nazi uniform.

(3,051 posts)She's written several coherent, albeit seriously misguided, articles where she defends Hitler as:
"not a bad person as they have painted him out to be. Here is a man who was not a coward, stood up for his country in a DESPERATE TIME OF NEED (unlike all of our cowardly leaders), and yet not only did he try his best to help his country and people get out of what was a time of depression, economic collapse, high unemployment, amongst many other things."
I was ready to dismiss her as a bimbo who was doing really stupid stuff for attention.
She's much worse. She actually supports Nazis, hates Jewish people, and is quite serious about it.

(45,319 posts)All of that before any actual 'reality TV'. So you have lots of banning to do. And remember, 'reality programming' is a term for any documentary you don't like or which is about a subject not deemed worthy by the speaker. What you suggest is a bit like saying 'let's ban comedy because I heard a really offensive joke that was not even funny'.

(49,001 posts)But I agree, let the schlock roll.
The answer to bad speech is not censorship, but more speech.
The root problem is not jerk programming but idiocracy viewership.
The solution is teaching critical thinking, not "teaching to the test" for facts and mechanical algorithms with no understanding. Further, the culture needs to find a way to respect scientists, engineers, doctors, teachers, and creative people more than sports celebrities and people who are famous for being famous.

(45,319 posts)Republicans say Michael Moore's documentaries are scripted and contrived, that's what I'm saying. It's not an effective argument, it speaks in generalities about a large form which actually ranges from the sublime to the horrific.
Tila's MTV show was a game show set up that's not 'reality TV' that's a game show. To censor that which brought Tila to the world you'd have to go for Playboy and Social Media. Then MTV. She got put on 'reality shows' because of her existing 'new media' celebrity. It takes a village.

(49,001 posts)Nope.
That is opinion, not fact.
Most "reality TV" shows are semi-scripted and are fabricated settings and circumstances. Most are definitely not documentaries.

It affected him, made him grumpy and a bit of a recluse - but it made him stronger too, and as an adult some of those who taunted him as a child came to respect him for his business sense and good judgment overall.
A common life story to many Jews, no doubt.

Like other forms of bigotry, one doesn't have to be an "extreme" example in order to be a bigot. Often, it is the gray areas which, IMO, determine if the person is just ignorant and parroting BS, or is actually a believer, and if so, then yes, that would make the person a bigot.

(53,956 posts)Cohn is, of course, the epitome of a self-loathing POS as he was both Jewish and gay, and was virulently anti-Semitic and homophobic. I agree there are variables, which is my I wouldn't consider Trump a "Jew hater", but as for him being an anti-Semite, I will have to go with a big question mark.
When the ADL did their global assessment of anti-Semitism, they had 11 questions, one had to respond to at least 6 as anti-Semitic, before they were considered to be anti-Semitic in the results. That's a pretty high bar, over half. There are those who always seem to have comments when it comes to anti-Semitism and issues surrounding Jews, but they have never gone full-on Nazi, yet, I still see them as anti-Semites. Conversely, I have seen people make anti-Semitic remarks whom I don't consider anti-Semites. That's why, with Trump, I have a big "?" next to him in regards to his being an anti-Semite. I know plenty of homophobic people who have gay family members, and a few who claim they aren't homophobes because, "some of their best friends are gay."

35% have never HEARD of the holocaust
38% believe the Jewish population worldwide is greater than 10% (actually 0.19%)
Percentage of those who think the holocaust is either a myth or greatly exaggerated: 32% for those NOT in the middle east and sub Saharan Africa, 63% of those IN the middle east and sub Saharan Africa.
How freeking depressing to me personally (you know I go to Greece a lot) that Greece is the worst outside the two areas mentioned in the above.

He was (is) a bright, good looking, tall guy and has never had a problem with the ladies, but was basically inundated with romantic opportunities.
Anyway, one Chinese doctor was pushing his sister on him rather aggressively. She was bright and shockingly beautiful.
It didn't work out, however, because she basically confessed that she wanted to have a child by him because "Jews have magical powers over money," and thus having a Jew in the family would bring them great wealth and power.
I've heard similar stories from Israeli friends traveling in Asia/India, in general.

They settled into their non-religious lives - kids barely knew they were Jewish. It taught him a very important lesson.

(53,956 posts)What Holocaust? New generation is ignorant of history
Years ago, I got the idea for a novel about the last living survivor of the Holocaust. He would be a child survivor, born in 1939 as a hidden child in a Jewish ghetto, and would live there until his family went to Auschwitz. How a little boy managed to survive that place after losing his parents is the stuff of novels, and it is.
Its titled The Last Witness, and I published it last year.
Along with flashbacks showing how the worst memories of the protagonists life occurred before he was 5 years old, the book describes his contemporary struggle in the future, the year 2039, when he is 100 years old. The world of 2039 is one in which people are pretty ignorant and complacent as far as the Holocaust is concerned.
One publisher said he had to suspend disbelief with my premise that a generation down the road would know so little about the Holocaust, which prompted me to do a video on the subject. Last fall I interviewed university students in Toronto, asking them about the Holocaust and World War II. What they didnt know would, literally, fill a book.
Here we are in April 2015, with Yom Hashoah commemorating those who perished in the most heinous crime of human history. At the same time, today never mind 2039 it seems that young people know next to nothing.

Half of People Surveyed by the ADL Don't Know What the Holocaust Is
MAY 13, 2014 4:15PM ET / NATIONAL
DANIELLE WIENER-BRONNER
Only 54 percent of the people surveyed by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in a massive, global poll have ever heard of the Holocaust. Even more disturbing, 32 percent of these believe the event to have been greatly exaggerated or a myth. That's something worth worrying about.
The ADL published the results today as part of a report on the attitudes towards Jews in over 100 countries. The ADL asked more than 53,000 people across the globe to respond to eleven anti-Semitic stereotypes attributed to Jews, including "Jews have too much power in the business world," "People hate Jews because of the way Jews behave," "Jews still talk too much about what happened to them in the Holocaust," and others. Those questioned were asked to respond with either "probably true," or "probably false." Those who answered "probably true" to six out of the eleven statements were counted as anti-Semitic in the survey, which, among other things, looked at the global breakdown of such attitudes.
Overall, the ADL found that 26 percent of respondents harbor anti-Semitic attitudes. About nine percent of American respondents agreed with six of the eleven statements, and the two that were most often mentioned were "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to this country/the countries they live in" and "Jews still talk too much about what happened to them in the Holocaust," suggesting that much of the ill-feelings are wrapped up in attitudes toward Israel. A number of European countries, like the UK (eight percent) Denmark (nine percent) the Netherlands (five percent) and Sweden (four percent) had low rates of anti-Semitism and also positively responded to these two statements most often.
Other countries had disturbingly high rates of anti-Semitic respondents. Sixty-nine percent of Greek respondents, 37 percent of French respondents, 45 percent of Polish respondents, 92 percent of Iraqis and, not surprisingly, 93 percent of those in the West Bank/Gaza hold anti-Semitic beliefs.

[hr]ADL survey: More than a quarter of the world is anti-Semitic
NEW YORK (JTA) A lot of people around the world hate the Jews.
Thats the main finding of the Anti-Defamation Leagues largest-ever worldwide survey of anti-Semitic attitudes.
The survey, released Tuesday, found that 26 percent of those polled representing approximately 1.1 billion adults worldwide harbor deeply anti-Semitic views. More than 53,000 people were surveyed in 102 countries and territories covering approximately 86 percent of the worlds population.
Our findings are sobering but, sadly, not surprising, ADL National Director Abraham Foxman said at a news conference Tuesday morning at ADLs national headquarters in New York. The data clearly indicates that classic anti-Semitic canards defy national, cultural, religious and economic boundaries.
Among the surveys key findings:
Some 70 percent of those considered anti-Semitic said they have never met a Jew. Overall, 74 percent of respondents said they had never met a Jew.
Thirty-five percent of those surveyed had never heard of the Holocaust. Of those who had, roughly one-third said it is either a myth or greatly exaggerated.
The most anti-Semitic region in the world is the Middle East and North Africa, with 74 percent harboring anti-Semitic views. Eastern Europe was second at 34 percent. The least anti-Semitic region was Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) at 14 percent.
The three countries outside the Middle East with the highest rates of anti-Semitic attitudes were Greece, at 69 percent, Malaysia at 61 percent and Armenia at 58 percent.
About 49 percent of Muslims worldwide harbor anti-Semitic views, compared to 24 percent of Christians.
The West Bank and Gaza were the most anti-Semitic places surveyed, with 93 percent of respondents expressing anti-Semitic views. The Arab country with the lowest level of anti-Semitic views was Morocco, at 80 percent. Iran ranked as the least anti-Semitic country in the Middle East, at 56 percent.
The least anti-Semitic country overall was Laos, where 0.2 percent of the population holds anti-Semitic views. The Philippines, Sweden, the Netherlands and Vietnam all came in at 6 percent or lower.
Approximately 9 percent of Americans and 14 percent of Canadians harbor anti-Semitic attitudes.
Thirty-four percent of respondents older than 65 were deemed anti-Semitic, compared to 25 percent of those younger than 65. Men polled were slightly more anti-Semitic than women.

At UC Davis, swastikas were spray-painted on the side of a Jewish fraternity house on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

As someone from a mixed family, we certainly had relatives who didn't like the Jewish side of the family, some who had to re-educated, and some who had no issues. Given that I am also gay, I certainly have experience with people who "have gay family members" who are in fact homophobic. I really don't see anti-Semitism being that different in regards to bigotry.
About your joke, true story: I was a diversity educator for years before I came to Oklahoma, almost 10 years, and it wasn't until I moved here that I actually heard someone say "that person won't Jew you on the price", which I had never heard outside of family stories or movies. Not a week later, my dear friend, an older African-American woman, who was Catholic...married to a Jew...surprise, was upset because someone in the dining hall called her a "Papist." Again, ten years of diversity training and I had never heard that term used! I wasn't even sure what the hell it was. I don't think it is a big term in the deep South.
MosheFeingold
(3,051 posts)". . . . someone in the dining hall called her a "Papist." Again, ten years of diversity training and I had never heard that term used! I wasn't even sure what the hell it was."
I first heard it working on JFK's campaign. It was meant to imply dual loyalties, something as a Jewish guy I fully understand.
Birchers were main users.
We just embraced it and made it our own, so it lost any sting it had. I think it kind of disappeared after the election.
The other old one from that time was "square head," which was for German/Dutch/low country immigrants of that time. I understood this one because they really do tend to have a squarish face.
And finally, there was "chicken eating" followed by either Lutheran, or, more commonly, Methodist, which is what Catholics called Protestants. I never figured out that one.
Here endeth the lesson in mid-century bigotry.

(3,014 posts)Jewish communities not needing the almost paternalistic championing that often comes from the left. Let's face it. Support from left leaning friends often comes with a price. You have to listen to them tell you that you don't know what's good for you (look at the US primaries and the criticism leveled at African American voters). Or that they understand you or your community's struggle better because they saw something on MSNBC/took a class/read it online. Or worse, they can tell you what you do wrong based on their own view.
When you have no use for that type of support, the supporters get cranky. If you won't be their pet, they pretty much ignore you or sneer at you when you are the victim of bigotry.
