The head of the House Oversight Committee is calling the director of the FBI to testify before the panel this week, on the heels of Republican outrage over his decision not to recommend charges against Hillary Clinton.
Director James Comey will testify Thursday morning, Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said in a statement Wednesday.
Individuals who intentionally skirt the law must be held accountable. Congress and the American people have a right to understand the depth and breadth of the FBI's investigation, Chaffetz said in a statement.
I thank Director Comey for accepting the invitation to publicly answer these important questions."

(3,284 posts)they've successfully blocked progress on many fronts. How can anyone think that Republicans best represent their interests? They're a complete joke of a party.

(3,040 posts)They are only the same in that they are both baseless attacks to discredit and destroy Hillary. This is more a combination of the fact it was discovered she had a private server in combination with the FOIA lawsuit filed by the AP and Judicial Watch.
SkeleTim1968
(83 posts)Was it due to the discovery of the private server or something else?
I apologize, I have totally lost track of this story and it's roots.
Else You Are Mad
(3,040 posts)Basically a few news organizations -- including the AP -- made FOIA requests for documents and both Hillary and the state department did not provide the requested docs.
The legal action comes after repeated requests filed under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act have gone unfulfilled. They include one request AP made five years ago and others pending since the summer of 2013.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, comes a day after Clinton broke her silence about her use of a private email account while secretary of state. The FOIA requests and lawsuit seek materials related to her public and private calendars, correspondence involving longtime aides likely to play key roles in her expected campaign for president, and Clinton-related emails about the Osama bin Laden raid and National Security Agency surveillance practices.
"After careful deliberation and exhausting our other options, The Associated Press is taking the necessary legal steps to gain access to these important documents, which will shed light on actions by the State Department and former Secretary Clinton, a presumptive 2016 presidential candidate, during some of the most significant issues of our time," said Karen Kaiser, AP's general counsel.

Smacks of a political deal to me, but- hey! I think everything's fixed.

(194 posts)Now when you have something serious such as extreme carelessness on the handling of classified material by a Secretary of State, that almost got her indicted, and something that may truly warrant some type of oversight; you have cried wolf so many damn times, nobody gives a shit except your right wing conspiracy nut jobs! As soon as they mention hearings, people start rolling their eyes.

(7,820 posts)political BS is a leftover remnant of the GOP wet dream to have a 100 year GOP dynasty. Tom Delay and Newt. They saw a way to gain political control of the country and pursued it through gerrymandering, lobbying, media control, and campaign finance laws...married to low tactics of polarization, fear, and hate (also perfected in Texas). The strategy worked to a large degree...real public discourse is wrecked, allowing one party to participate in the democratic process without a sense of responsibility to facts, problem solving, country, moral justice, history, public pressure, or reality.
They should be greeted on talk shows with ridicule and piercing questions...instead, they are offered a platform to provide 'balance' and reality show type horse race drama.
The problem is, we'd be much better off with two functioning, responsible political parties. We do a dis-service to democracy by pretending we have that.
markj757
(194 posts)I have made this point before that we are a much stronger country with at least two functioning responsible major political parties who have a different world view, but based on serious thoughtful disagreement. I'm a Democrat, but I don't want to be governed in a country of all Democrats. And unfortunately, for our great nation, we no longer have two functioning responsible major political parties. But hopefully, Trump is the hitting of rock bottom that Republicans need to realize they have a serious problem. And they brought it on themselves.

(15,805 posts)They want to force Comey to defend his recommendation not to charge Hillary with anything, but to do that, Comey will also be defending Clinton. Think of the optics... the head of the FBI will be doubling down on why there is no reason to charge Clinton with anything.
These Republicans aren't too bright. In their overweening zeal to persecute Hillary for being smarter than they are in playing the game of cutthroat politics, they aren't doing any long term thinking or considering the consequences of what will happen when their so called hearing turns into a Hillary for President ad.
