FAA bans flights between the U.S. and Turkey
Source: USA Today
The FAA banned all flights into and out of Turkey for U.S. aircraft on Saturday, one day after a coup attempt rocked the country that is a NATO member and critical U.S. ally.
The agency issued a notice saying it was prohibiting all U.S. commercial and private aircraft from operating into or out of any airport in Turkey.
"The FAA is monitoring the situation in Turkey in coordination with our partners in the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security and will update the restrictions as the situation evolves," the FAA said in a statement.
Turkey has been embroiled in turmoil since some segments of the military attempted to overthrow Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the government Friday night. Military units closed key routes into Ankara and Istanbul and seized control of state-run television stations.

(24,324 posts)Very naive about booking flights, etc etc.
They went on a MED cruise/flights tour for their honeymoon. (They are about 70 years old)
that included flights to and from Istanbul.( I forget if the cruise started there or not.)
Anyway... They arrived somehow in Istanbul from the US and left on July 4, two days BEFORE the bombing of Ataturk.
They started on their cruise, went to several ports, and then... ready for this? went to NICE, and flew out a couple days before the truck nut to Athens.
I spoke with them last night..they are in Athens....(texted, actually, which was not easy as they are not too up on texting... ) They were supposed to fly from Athens to....... ATATURK on Monday to somewhere, and thence back to the USA. They were scared to do that. They were just frightened to death.. SO, sitting in a sushi bar, I found alternate flights for them. BUT they didn't know how to book. SO---- I did it for them.. I told them the options and what I thought was best..
THEY wanted the shortest and cheapest flight, which left them only 1 hour and 45 minutes in O'Hare...through Copenhagen.... I convinced them that was no good !!.. I finally convinced them to let me book LOT- Athens to Warsaw to O'Hare to Memphis, where they live. PLUS they have an 8 hour layover in Warsaw.. enough to do a little sightseeing. If they dare! :> )
Bet THEY never go-a-traveling again..
I think I got all the dates and info right but,,, don't hold it against me if I goofed....
