Drone infiltrates Israeli border with Syria, interception fails
Source: Israel Hayom
Two Patriot missiles and a third air-to-air missile fail to intercept unidentified drone, which returned to Syrian territory A Hezbollah associate reportedly claims the drone was an attempt "to test the alertness of the Israeli military."
Israel on Sunday fired missiles towards an unmanned drone that entered Israeli airspace from Syria, the IDF said in a statement.
"Two Patriot air defense missiles were fired towards a drone that infiltrated Israeli airspace in the central Golan Heights. The drone returned to Syria," the statement said. Both Patriot missiles failed to intercept the drone, with shrapnel from one of them landing in Kibbutz Ayelet Hashahar and lightly wounding a 14-year-old girl. The girl was evacuated to Ziv Medical Center in Safed for treatment.
An air raid siren was heard in the Golan region immediately before the Patriot missiles were fired. Fighter jets were also reportedly sent to shoot down the drone with an air-to-air missile, but also failed to hit the target.

WTF. I thought the Iron Dome was impenetrable? Why are we investing so much money in anti-missile defense if DRONES, and I assume cruise missiles and hypersonic-glide missiles, can just penetrate them like this?
"Iron Dome (Hebrew: כִּפַּת בַּרְזֶל, kippat barzel) is a mobile all-weather air defense system[8] developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aircraft Industries.[7] The system is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to 70 kilometres (43 mi) away and whose trajectory would take them to a populated area.[9][10] Israel hopes to increase the range of Iron Dome's interceptions, from the current maximum of 70 kilometres (43 mi) to 250 kilometres (160 mi) and make it more versatile so that it could intercept rockets coming from two directions simultaneously.[11]"

(6,852 posts)It's as a success rate In the mid 90s to the best of my knowledge. But it was mostly created to send again rocket attacks from Gaza. It's defenses against this type of thing probably hasn't been tried yet.

Great song, what a blast from the past, pun intended. lol

(7,769 posts)That's one bad ass Russian drone.
Evades a couple of Patriots and an air-to-air missile!?!
That's some serious stealth and/or maneuverability.

(2,208 posts)most likely. lol
Seriousy, the poster that said it was probably a toy drone seems pretty on target.
But better safe than sorry.
Israel was correct to try to destroy it, there was no way to tell what it might actually have been up to.
It does raise the issue that drones could be used as a harassment tool that forces a disproportionally expensive response from Israel.
I am sure experts are considering and planning to counter this.

and it shows that her parents' tax money is being well-spent.
Better safe than sorry but it will provide embarrassment/amusement across that
border for a little while (at least until the Israelis do something really stupid in order
to salvage their "pride" .

(2,208 posts)The Iron Dome radar can pick up some very small rockets, like these shown here:

I suspect this drone was even smaller, making it harder to accurately lock onto.

(2,208 posts)Who knows, could very well have been a tiny commercial drone that was barely big enough to trigger on the radar.
