Treasure hunter who went looking for $2m in gold found dead in New Mexico

Remains of 54-year-old Randy Bilyeu found almost seven months after he disappeared while looking for writer Forrest Fenn’s hoard of gold and jewels

A treasure hunter who disappeared this year while searching for an author’s cache of gold and jewels in the New Mexico wilderness was confirmed dead by authorities Tuesday after his remains were discovered west of Santa Fe. Santa Fe Police spokesman Greg Gurule said medical investigators confirmed the remains found along the Rio Grande north of Cochiti Lake were those of Randy Bilyeu, a 54-year-old grandfather from Colorado.

. . .

Bilyeu disappeared in early January while searching for antiquities dealer and writer Forrest Fenn’s $2m hoard of gold and jewels in northern New Mexico.

. . .

Fenn, an eccentric 85-year-old from Santa Fe, has inspired a cult following since his announcement several years ago that he stashed a small bronze chest somewhere in the Rocky Mountains.

The hidden treasure has inspired thousands to search in vain through remote corners of New Mexico, Yellowstone national park and elsewhere in the mountains. Treasure hunters share their experiences on blogs and brainstorm about the clues. The mystery has been featured on national networks, igniting even more interest.

Next time you get a bright idea, Forrest Fenn, keep it to yourself,
or donate the "treasure" to someone who really needs it, while living. [/center]

That's like blaming John Naismith for Reggie Lewis' death. If only he hadn't invented basketball, Reggie would be with us today. People die doing stuff. It's called living. Beats the shit out of dying in a hospital bed from old age, if you ask me.

There will undoubtedly be more to follow.

To be clearer, had Fenn simply taken his ####ing 2 million dollar treasure, and respectfully given it to a needy person, a need family, several persons or families, or hospital, or library, or school, or suffering poor people in another country, instead of sending thousands of loons off staggering around in the desert, and dying of exposure or starvation, it just might have been a better choice, and a more human choice, and less perverted.

and was buried at a hill (near his home) in a stone box. Of course he returned the golden tablets to an angel so they can no longer be examined.
