Clint Eastwood Says Grieving Military Family Was Exploited At DNC
Source: Atlanta Journal 10 hours ago
Clint Eastwood, who spurred a social media storm with comments during his interview with Esquire magazine, says the grieving military family featured during the Democratic National Convention and then embroiled in a war of words with Donald Trump was exploited by the DNC.
What do I care? Eastwood said when a cameraman caught up with him after the social media firestorm and asked if he feared young people would stay away from his movies.
Then as during his Esquire interview, he did not endorse Trump, and criticized him for tangling with the Khan family. I think he made a mistake, Eastwood said. You dont have to be rude to somebody.
But again, as during his magazine interview, he pointed blame at both parties. The other guy was being exploited, Eastwood said. Thats not good, either.

Remember Benghazi mom blaming Hillary for everything including dandruff?
Now THAT was exploitation, since what she said was untrue. The same cannot be said for the Khans.

Of course, his appearance obviously is political. He spoke at the DNC.
It was in response to Trump's political comments about Muslims.

(10,126 posts)That was a speech from the heart of an ordinary (very decent) citizen who suffered a great loss - the sacrifice of a wonderful son while in the service of the military.
It's pretty tough to suggest exploitation when the man delivered his own words about the loss of his son and campaign issues. The result was that those words resonated so much with Americans that it sent the Trump campaign into a smoky tail spin spiraling down to the ground - along with the polls.
Again, that is not exploitation. It's closer to a grand slam on the issues by an overage minor leaguer in the World Series.

(13,390 posts)He had been sued over ADA violations 5 years earlier. Glorifying the euthanasia of a disabled woman was a giant FU to people with disabilities. If it wasn't intentional, it was quite a coincidence.

(13,390 posts)It is not objectively or anywhere near universally true as the glorification of suiccide and euthanasia of disabled people presumes. It was a story that expressed a devaluation of the lives of disabled people. That Eastwood fended off an ADA lawsuit and lobbied to weaken the law shows that the guy who produced it is far from sympathetic to disabled people.

(20,202 posts)Yes, I think being able to move your own body is better than being paralized, and my quadraplegic cousin feels the same way. That does not mean that I think that able bodied people are better people. I'm disabled myself and I for damn sure wish I wasn't. That doesn't mean I don't try to make the best of my life. My cousin makes the best of his but he would still like to walk.

(13,390 posts)It would be better to off yourself because you need more help now than you did before. People who are close to people who are disabled know that it is possible to lead a satisfying and even happy life with the right supports.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,202 posts)She made a choice. It was her choice to make. Had she decided to live being paralyzed, that's her choice too. Perhaps she would have made that choice if her family weren't such greedy assholes. Yes, I think if a disabled person feels their life if unbearable, they should be able to make the choice to end it.
There were twin brothers in Belgium who were deaf. They were in their 40s and lived together working as cobblers. Then they found out they were going blind. They wanted to end their lives together, with the help of a doctor. The rest of their family didn't want them too initially but eventually they agreed to let them choose their fate. Their were plenty of people who felt they shouldn't be allowed that choice. Personally, I don't think it's any different than a person with a terminal illness. It's their life. It's their choice and I respect it.

Movies and attitudes that glorify and romanticize suicide and euthanasia of lives so often considered unworthy of living is the logic that drove the eugenics movement. It's also the reason republicans get away with not funding services for disabled. After all, "wouldn't they be better off dead anyway?" The narrative you are perpetuating actually kills people by making people feel comfortable with it.

He was a nice person who didn't seem to mind taking some time out to talk to a young fan from the sticks who had questions about movie making.
I was a huge, HUGE fan of his, but now I think there is something wrong with him.
