Rio diving pool changes color from blue to green overnight
Source: NBC
China won its third consecutive diving gold medal on Tuesday, but the buzz was about the color of the water in the diving pool, which turned from a clear blue to a murky green overnight.
The adjacent swimming pool was not affected. Water quality has been a major issue surrounding the Rio Olympics, but in the ocean and lagoons, not the venue pools.
A statement from Rio 2016 organizers says water tests were conducted and there is no risk to athletes. Organizers say they're investigating what caused the color change.
American diver David Boudia, who won silver while diving into blue water on Monday, tweeted a photo of the pool with the text, "Wait is someone playing a joke or are we celebrating St Patty's Day early here in Rio?"

Vitamin B Complex and Green Urine
by KATHRYN GILHULY Last Updated: May 17, 2015
If you see a change in your urine color, and you're taking B vitamins, don't panic. Depending on the amounts and combinations of B vitamins you take, you may experience changes in urine color. Your urine could turn orange or green. B vitamin complex may include up to eight B vitamins: B-1, thiamine; B-2, riboflavin; B-3, niacin; B-5, pantothenic acid; B-6, pyridoxine; B-7, biotin; B-12, cobalamin; and folate, the synthetic form of which is called folic acid. If you take B vitamins in large doses, you may also experience other side effects, some serious. Consult your doctor before taking vitamin B supplements or if you experience any side effects while using them. Also seek medical attention if you experience pain while urinating along with a change in urine color.

(14,853 posts)could do it.
I'm not really sure how quickly copper could turn that large pool that color, so dye might be the most likely culprit.

(111,260 posts)It's too uniform to be biological, it has to be dye.
My guess is that some vandal thought it would be funny.

(14,910 posts)It's possible if the chemicals were off enough in the diving pool, that rain could have affected it's appearance and left the lap pool relatively untouched and drastically different from the diving pool.
Just a thought...

(520 posts)Almost impossible to get that green overnight by algal growth.

(32,822 posts)Just needs a good chlorine shock.
groundloop
(11,519 posts)I saw it on the internet so it must be true.
added: I just read that the diving pool is kept at a warmer temperature than the lap pool. That would make for more favorable conditions for algae to grow, and also use up chlorine faster.

Not so much order and progress, though, but at least color coordinated.

It's a good reason to dye the pool.

RIO DE JANEIRO Olympic diving chiefs claimed on Wednesday to have solved an embarrassing saga at the Games diving arena that turned the competition pool a deep shade of green and left competitors joking that they were leaping into a swamp.
While Rios organizing committee and FINA, the world governing body for swimming and diving, insisted the water posed no danger to athletes, the divers and independent water experts have been very skeptical.
FINA said the reason for the discoloration, which was so severe that pairs divers could not see the partner next to them when they submerged, was because the pools water tanks ran out some of the chemicals necessary for the water treatment process. A water polo pool adjacent to the diving well also is green.
As a result the pH level of the water was outside the usual range, causing the discoloration, FINA said. The FINA Sport Medicine Committee conducted tests on the water quality and concluded that there was no risk to the health and safety of the athletes, and no reason for the competition to be affected.
Rio spokesman Mario Andrada insisted the water will be blue from now on after water experts spent Wednesday morning carrying out a series of tests.

The Olympic Games organisers blamed a lack of alkalinity levels and said the build-up of algae, which caused the change in colour, posed no risk to competitors.
On Wednesday, the same change in colour was noticed in the water polo pool, which is situated in the same aquatics centre.

Organizers shut pool to treat green water
By Brenda Goh | RIO DE JANEIRO
Olympic organizers canceled diving training on Friday morning and shut the pool in an attempt to restore the water to its original blue color, three days after its emerald hue stirred concern among competitors.
The pool turned green on Tuesday, becoming the subject of numerous jokes and creating a headache for organizers. An adjacent pool used for water polo and synchronized swimming has also started to change color.
Despite promises to restore the color of the pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatic center by Wednesday evening, organizers were still trying to adjust its chemical levels, a spokesman for Rio 2016 told a news conference.
"We have learnt that chemistry is not an exact science. Some things, as you can see, have gone on longer than expected," Mario Andrada said.
Competitors were performing dry training in the venue on Friday, using an area where divers can practise using trampolines, platforms and harnesses.
