Shahram Amiri defected to the U.S. at the height of Western efforts to thwart Iran's nuclear program

NEW YORK — Republican Donald Trump is suggesting that rival Hillary Clinton’s emails may be responsible for the death of an Iranian nuclear scientist who was executed for spying for the United States.

Hours after an unusually disciplined speech on his economic plan for the country, Trump, using the “people are saying” sentence structure he often favors to make accusations, tweeted Monday night: “Many people are saying that the Iranians killed the scientist who helped the U.S. because of Hillary Clinton’s hacked emails.”

He didn’t say which people he meant. The FBI has said there is no evidence that Clinton’s emails were hacked due to her use of a private account and server during her tenure as secretary of state. Also, the emails released by the State Department provide information similar to what U.S. officials had already discussed publicly at the time.

Tweeted back Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill:

“‘Many people are saying’=’I made this up.'”

So, for instance, expect him to mention 'Seth Rich' today or tomorrow. He was a DNC staffer who was working on voting rights who was murdered (shot in the street) a month ago. Possibly a robbery, but it's not clear. But Assange has tried to blame the non-appearance of more leaks he'd promised about Hillary on the dangers his 'informants' face, pointing at Rich - though he weaseled out of making an explicit claim that Rich had given Wikileaks anything. But the Discussionist loons are going crazy about it, so Trump will fasten onto that quicker than an Arcturan Megaleech.

The Trump campaign has been asking questions about whether the execution in Iran of a former defector to the United States was related to Hillary Clinton’s private email server. The insinuation is that somehow her emails led to the Iranian scientist’s death. As Pence put it, he could have lost his life “because of the recklessness and carelessness of Hillary Clinton using a private server.”

As can be seen with this timeline of newspaper articles, the defection and then return of Amiri was widely covered in the news media in 2009 and 2010. Iranian officials could have learned everything they needed to know about Amiri’s defection from reading The Post. Moreover, Iran first publicly raised questions about his disappearance. There was little to be learned from the cryptic messages in Clinton’s emails, even if Iran had somehow gained access to Clinton’s server.
