Northeast Ohio rocked by 11th earthquake linked to Youngstown injection

Northeast Ohio rocked by 11th earthquake linked to Youngstown injection wells
http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/northeast-ohio-rocked-by-11th-earthquake-linked-to-youngstown-injection-wells-1.252977

(snip)
The 4.0-magnitude quake was centered near Youngstown, reported the U.S. Geological Survey and the Ohio Earthquake Information Center.

The earthquake at 3:05 p.m. was felt as far away as Michigan, Ontario, Pennsylvania and New York, reported Michael C. Hansen, state geologist and coordinator of the Ohio Seismic Network, part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Geological Survey.

(snip)
The quake was the 11th over the last eight months in Mahoning County, all within two miles of the injection wells, he said. Saturday’s quake was the largest yet.

(snip)
There is “little doubt” that the quake is linked to injection wells that the state and the owner agreed on Friday to shut down, Hansen said.

On the contrary, fracking is good for the environment. It makes our drinking water sweet and clear, and it ensures clean, grazable grass for decades to come. Flower bloom brighter near injection sites, and the run-off is as pure as the gentlest spring rain.

You indulged in a bit of it yourself, yet didn't include the 'sarcasm' tag. Are we to assume that you harbor a ridiculous & irresponsible attitude as well? BTW, that's a rhetorical question on my part; I am familiar with your work and recognize it as sarcasm - tag or not.

Oh, so many joys to the fracked up process.

The sad thing is that we're joking about it but sound exactly like the supporters of the practice.

It's believed that fracking caused the earthquakes in Virginia that caused the damage to the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral. I was raised in Virginia and there are no fault lines there. I doubt there are any in Ohio either.

I think everyone should watch the documentary Gas Land. When fracking makes one's drinking water flammable, I think that's an indication that it's not safe. Of course no one in the energy industry seems to care much about safety anyway.

I had never made the association before. I decided to look it up.

http://stateimpact.npr.org/pennsylvania/2011/08/26/how-fracking-causes-earthquakes-but-not-the-one-in-virginia/

Geologist James Coleman, who works for the U.S. Geological Survey, says fracking can create quakes, but not those as large as the one in Virginia.

“It’s pretty clear that in some areas, underground injection of wastewater causes relatively small earthquakes, smaller than what we had here in Virginia, but disturbing to some people,” said Coleman.

Fracking has been linked by some geologists to small earthquakes in Arkansas, Colorado, and England. But an industry official assured Coleman on Tuesday that Mineral, Va. has not been the site of any fracking.
