FBI investigating Russian hack of New York Times reporters, others
Source: CNN
Hackers thought to be working for Russian intelligence have carried out a series of cyber breaches targeting reporters at the New York Times and other US news organizations, according to US officials briefed on the matter.
The intrusions, detected in recent months, are under investigation by the FBI and other US security agencies. Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said.
The FBI declined to comment and a spokesperson for The New York Times would not confirm the attacks or the investigation.
"Like most news organizations we are vigilant about guarding against attempts to hack into our systems," said New York Times Co. spokeswoman Eileen Murphy. "There are a variety of approaches we take up to and including working with outside investigators and law enforcement. We won't comment on any specific attempt to gain unauthorized access to The Times."
The breaches targeting reporters and news organizations are part of an apparent surge in cyber attacks in the past year against entities beyond US government agencies.

Greenwald, Snowden and Assange were unavail- Yeah, yeah, you know the rest...
Seriously -- Greenwald, Assange and certain DUers here would be having rage orgasms if the U.S. was hacking foreign news orgs, so I heartily await their statements...

(23,099 posts)Then he hates the NYT, and guess what, Russian operatives also hacked their reporters. What do these 2 things have in common?
Russia trying to manipulate the race for Drumpf so they can sieze Ukraine with no repercussions. This is why I am worried about this race, it seems unlikely that Russia wouldn't hack our voting machines when they have so very much at stake.

(7,897 posts)The GOP has far better access to all the levels of the voting systems in those and other GOP controlled states. We're worried it will happen in NC even though we have paper trails to identify the difference.
One serious consideration about potential Russian vote hacking is that it would likely be seen as an act of war comparable to our landing the entire 101st Airborne Division at the Sheremetyevo International Airport, outside Moscow. Not a risk even Putin would take.
This doesn't mean they might not take other avenues to help skew the outcome, like funding the opposition candidate, or others in the GOP down ticket races.
The questions to ask is what do they actually gain by what they are doing, and are we hearing the accurate story about their so-called actions? There yet remain many Neo-Cons in all levels of the Intelligence community and State Department who have a demonstrated anti-Putin cold-war bent to their outlook.

It's also possible they have already anticipated your suggestion.
What I would be asking is why did NSA not see this and report it? Or did they? What about the other members of our Intel community? What did they know and when did they know it?
If you are going to respond to the actions of Putin's government agencies it would help to know just why and when and how they did it.
I have no doubts about Putin's desires for conquest and influence. They seem abundantly clear.
I have yet to see reasons to believe that we are being told the whole truth by the CIA or anyone remotely involved in the Intel structure.
As you may have noticed recently there are career diplomats who have said publicly that we should invade Syria, and that we should be more militantly active in response to the events in the Ukraine, contrary to the express views of President Obama. It is just possible that some of this latest red scare has roots far closer to Langley or Foggy Bottom than Moscow.
