RNC chief critique: Clinton didn't smile during national security forum

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus slammed Hillary Clinton Wednesday for seeming angry and not smiling more during a national security forum.

"@HillaryClinton was angry + defensive the entire time - no smile and uncomfortable - upset that she was caught wrongly sending our secrets," he said in a tweet about the "Commander in Chief" forum hosted by NBC.

His tweet was swiftly criticized on social media for being sexist.

The Clinton campaign quickly responded to his tweet: "Actually, that's just what taking the office of President seriously looks like."

I think Reince's put down will be well received by men who wonder what is the big deal about telling random women to smile or getting called out for not making similar comments about men. Its a power play. You are a woman, I expect you to smile. You may be President, but you are obligated to smile for my benefit. And, if you smile at an inappropriate time such as during a national security forum, then they pile on you for being a ditzy.

It is similar to the attacks on Obama for being too cool and an angry black man. You can't win.

Smile — it can’t be that bad. I think you dropped your smile somewhere back there! You’re not smiling; how can I change that?

Sound familiar? If you’re a woman, you’ve probably heard men make comments like these. And if you’re a man, you might have said them. I’ve personally heard all of the above. But the most frightening time a man ever commented on my smile was at a college party. He walked across the room and yelled so severely in my face for not smiling that I feared he’d hit me. He told me to leave if I didn’t want to have fun.

A few months ago, there was another woman in the news who didn’t smile enough. A male reporter asked Serena Williams why she wasn’t smiling since she’d won that day. Williams replied she was tired and didn’t find the press conference “super enjoyable.” But even if she were enjoying herself, should she be expected to physically show it? She wasn’t hosting an event. She was fulfilling a requirement, same as male tennis players like Roger Federer. It probably never crossed that reporter’s mind to ask a male athlete why he wasn’t smiling, because men are not expected to smile the same way women are — and that is the kind of thinking that needs to change.

* * *
When a man tells me to smile, I feel like I’ve been contracted to provide aesthetic entertainment for him — a contract I never signed. I’ve become more like an object in his eyes, which makes it easier for him to mold me into what he wants to see. It may sound extreme, but it reminds me of a dog owner telling his pet to perform a trick. Basically, I feel objectified. After a man tells me to smile, I always tell my girlfriends about it, and we always shake our heads over the fact that it happened yet again. And when I hear a man using the smile gimmick to flirt, a definite miscommunication results. While he hears himself expressing romantic interest, I hear him trying to exert control over me and my actions. The man who tells a woman to smile should understand that he has no more control over her smile than he does over any other part of her body.

and was crushed when it was not forthcoming. Priebus was also counting on a moment of levity from Hillary, so that she could be branded as not taking national defense seriously. Since she was throughly professional and on her game in light of some tough questions, that hopeful scenario was also a washout.

Not sure I've ever seen Reince smile, now that I think about it. Perhaps he is "upset" and "uncomfortable" that his candidate is a disaster. He looks a little "angry" and "defensive" to me.

One of THE most annoying things about her is her big grin whenever she speaks. She could be talking about the latest axe murderer and that fake smile would never leave her ruby, red lips.

And I don't know if any of the geniuses at the RNC noticed, but tRump had a pretty noticeable scowl on his face especially when talking about our top military leaders. How were we supposed to take that? tRump being Presidential or tRump bring completely disrespectful of them as he described them as being reduced to RUBBLE. What an ass....completely unprepared for the top job.
