Romney Advisers Reveal Strategy: Ignore Journalists, Pander To Right-Wing Conspriacy Websites

Source: ThinkProgress

In a stunning interview with Breitbart.com, two top advisers to Mitt Romney revealed the campaign’s plan to largely ignore journalists in favor of right-wing conspiracy websites.

From the beginning of the campaign, Romney has pointedly avoided news outlets who might pose tough questions. The press dubbed it “the Mittness Protection Program.” As the campaign wore on, Romney has refused to answer direct questions about major policy issues central to the campaign. For example, Romney has still not stated whether he would undo Obama’s order ending deportations for many young undocumented immigrants.

Romney campaign spokesman Lenny Alcivar recently outlined how the campaign will avoid journalists and cooridnate and communicate their message through Brietbart.com and the Drudge Report:

When this election is over, one of the lessons that will be learned by the mainstream media is that they no longer have a toe-hold on how Americans receive their news. Never before – in a way that has taken Democrats off stride – have we seen the confluence of an aggressive online community, led by Breitbart, and an aggressive campaign team not willing to cede an inch of ground to Democrats. This combination has created a new political reality. We no longer allow the mainstream media to define the political realities in America. The rise of Breitbart, Drudge and others, combined with an aggressive Romney campaign is a powerful tool in the arsenal of the conservative movement.

The governor will no longer allow the mainstream media to dictate the terms of this debate. This is just the beginning… We are witnessing the rise of the center right media.

If he hears tough talk from a foreign leader is Willard going to run and hide??

This way, if he does horrible things, nobody can call him on having promised a better alternative during the campaign. Uh, in the rare case that he has any plans at all, that is.

we are witnessing the purge of what is left of the centrist republicans from their party . the republican party is far right with the extremists dragging them even further into the void.

we know who still supports Mitt.

This needs to be drilled into the minds of those who for some inane reason feel that Mitt Romney is a viable candidate to represent this country.

Just simply break through the blather of the punditocracy and keep harping on the reality-based topics, chief of which is "What is Romney's plan?" "Where does he stand on the issues?" "What is his record?" And for every answer to those questions, the follow-up question-- "What is your source for that?"

..of course, as hideous as Bush was as a President, at least he could appear charming and funny in soundbites. Willard lacks that ability.. they can't even make Lurch look human no matter how hard they try. He will lie his ass off in the debates.. as he's been lying every single day so far, but he lacks any charm or wit. Obama will wipe the floor with him.

And can the journalist for ONCE grow a spine and say "well, if the jerk won't talk to us, if we can't have access, then we'll print the TRUTH?" Will that happen again in our lifetimes??

Do these nitwits even know what they're saying? Traditional media has lost its "toe-hold?"

Admittedly, politicians have no choice but to consider online media these days (and most of them do), but to pretend that Drudge and Breitbart pull significant weight outside of their own fan bases is wishful thinking of the worst (well, the best, actually) kind.

Most people only get a fraction of their news from online sources, and those who do rely on web sources (me, f'rinstance) are the least likely to be swayed by "the other side's" opinion.

When this election is over, one of the lessons that will be learned is the limitation of online media, especially hyperpartisan media like Drudge, et al, who sing — off-key — only to their own choir.

I love this strategy, Mitt — by all means, keep it up!

Using the word "center" to describe Breitbart and Drudge is an attempt to shift the goalposts so far to the right that the end zone is 100 yards long.

That's cute.

Reality is, Mitt's got nothing. And they're gonna learn that wingnut websites are not the best use of their time. That's called "preaching to the choir".

to the fearful and the ignorant. There are people in this country that believe Obama is the front-man for a worldwide conspiracy to...um...take away our freedoms...or something. At any rate there's a lot of scary people out there that are running directly into the arms of whoever is pulling Romney's strings. And they're going to come out for the vote.

I'm not sure what the end game is. Steal the election or, failing that, start open conflict in this country in order to paralyze Obama's next administration. I'm not ruling anything out with these criminals.
