A man who was killed after stabbing eight people Saturday night inside a Minnesota mall was a soldier of the Islamic State, an ISIS-linked news agency said Sunday morning.
The attack occurred around 8 p.m. inside the Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud, Minn., about 70 miles northwest of Minneapolis, according to media reports. The still-unnamed man was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer.
The suspect, who was wearing a private security uniform, made at least one reference to Allah during the attack and asked at least one person whether they were Muslim before attacking them, according to the St. Cloud Police Department.
In a statement Sunday, Amaq News Agency said the suspect carried out the operation in response to calls to target citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition.

(413 posts)What the right wingnuts are too stupid realize is that these attacks victimize Muslims as well by making Islamaphobia more socially acceptable.

(413 posts)The Alt Right actively encourages bigotry against Muslims and they use these attacks as justification.

(3,967 posts)I think the government should figure out how, where and by whom these people are being radicalized and then try to prevent that from happening. I don't know how to balance the considerations of too much surveillance vs. not enough.

I do realize though, that after all these hours the info has probably already been scrubbed.

(322 posts)Just like in Orlando, San Bernardino or the Minneapolis case of 3 men charged with plotting to join ISIS. It's a little pet peeve of mine when someone uses words like "monster" or various connotations to denote mental illness anytime someone does something bad. I suppose it's to avoid more uncomfortable truths, very sane people do bad things and there are no monsters just fellow humans.

(115,677 posts)Leaders of the Somali-American community in St. Cloud gathered Sunday with his family and issued a statement of sympathy for the family and the nine victims of the attack.
Community leader Abdul Kulane said as far as the family and community know, the suspect did not have any history of violence. He was known as a smart, accomplished student at Apollo High School. He was a junior at St. Cloud State University, Kulane said. Adan was also working part-time as a private security officer, leaders said.
The last time he was seen by family was about 6 or 6:30 p.m. Saturday when he said he was going to the mall to buy an iPhone 7. They don't know what happened after that.

Like the police, Minnesota FBI spokesman Kyle Loven declined to say Sunday if investigators believe the attack was a terrorist act. The FBI says it is assisting St. Cloud police in the investigation

(26,355 posts)Granted, there's the stochastic terrorism aspect of it, but I highly doubt that ISIS actually directly organized this one.
