New York Times Editor Vows To Call Out Trump When He Blatantly Lies

Source: Talking Points Memo

By KATHERINE KRUEGER Published SEPTEMBER 20, 2016, 9:42 AM EDT

Straight-laced legacy media companies, wedded to balance and objectivity, have never been good at calling a lie what it is. But now the New York Times is starting to point out lies in their news coverage of Donald Trump.

As Quartz flagged on Tuesday, at least five stories in the Grey Lady’s Sept. 17 edition, including its lead print story, contained the words “lie,” “false” and “untrue” in headlines, first paragraphs and top sections in stories about the GOP nominee.

The shift came as Trump at last put to rest the pet conspiracy theory that took his political aspirations mainstream, declaring that “Obama was born in the United States. Period” while fueling another myth: that Hillary Clinton and her 2008 campaign started the birther movement.

Dean Baquet, the executive editor of the Times, told the site the birther issue represents “outright lying. And he lied over a long period. It is a real word and we will use it when warranted.”

This would SEEM to be a turning point. But I won't hold my breath. Old habits are hard to break. Especially the really nasty ones. Particularly when it means you'd have to wake up and actually do some legitimate independent credible work for a change.

Remember, it's just SO very much easier to just work off the talking points that are already pre-written for you so you don't have to work so hard. You barely have to get your hands dirty, and you sure don't have to bother your precious, pampered little self with having to roll up your sleeves, sit there pouring through papers and documents, digging for the facts even if it keeps you at your desk long after everybody else has gone home. We used to call that "shoe leather." As in - you wear your shoe leather down, running around chasing facts, knocking on doors, probing sources, scouring details, digging into research, you know - WORK.

Let's all think of David Fahrenthold the Washington Post reporter who wound up calling up more than 300 charities - doing a LONG and tedious slog...

Fahrenthold has taken his Twitter followers on the journey by tracking his work on an old-fashioned pad of paper which he tweets photos of.
He makes lists of charities -- he has called 326 so far -- and records the last time Trump donated. In most cases the answer is "never," written in black link. Occasionally he records a donation date in red ink.
"I needed to find a way to make futility look interesting," he explained. By making a list and using different colors, "you can see it all at a glance."
Fahrenthold said he found that "the magic of Twitter is, you can show people your progress along the way."

and THIS provides a perfect example of lazy-ass slovenly "reporting" via talking points, versus the REAL stuff where you buckle down, roll up your sleeves, and start DIGGING. For these weird unfamiliar things called FACTS.

Trump has a pretty good "tell" when he lies...His mouth is moving.

I know politicians lie, all of them do it to one degree or another, but I've never seen one do it so consistently and obviously as Trump. Take a look at the politifact and factcheck pages to see it.

On politifact 53% of the asshole's statments are pants on fire (18%) or false (35%).

An editor of the New York fucking Times just said he will commit to doing his job?

it is a sad day when a journalist at a news paper has to vow to do what he is being paid to supposedly do.

"Mr. Trump, what new evidence has come to your attention that prompted you to state that President Obama was born in the United States?"

If he can't point to any new evidence, the follow up question should be:
"Then why did you continue to promote the birther theory long after the president produced his birth certificate, and why do you reverse yourself now?"

I expect Trump would deny he continued to promote birtherism and blame its origin on Hillary's 2008 campaign, both of which are obvious lies that should be pointed out as such to his face.

No doubt Trump would rail against unfair treatment by the media and not allow further access to those who forcefully revealed him as a blatant liar. That's why it's vital for all allegedly reputable media outlets to embrace the policy of calling out lies and liars for what they are. Eventually, the only pandering media would be Fox, Breitbart, and other highly biased propaganda outlets.

Trump would no longer get such an extensive free platform to spout lies that go unchallenged.

Well, well, well.

I'm whelmed.

I still can't get out of my mind the absolutely INFURIATING headline during the bush/cheney era - "Prevaricating President?" OH. MY. FREAKIN'. GOD. They avoided labeling bush/cheney a liar at all costs. It was almost obscene. No. I take that back. NO "almost" about it!

"Prevaricating President?"

It's LONG PAST time for this. I guess last Friday's let's-blame-Hillary party re: the birther mess - TRUMP'S OWN birther mess, TRUMP'S OWN PERSONALLY INITIATED birther mess - was the last straw. Stunk up the joint too badly even for the NYTimes.

Wow. Nice of 'em to finally wake up, 'eh?

Now that the Trump apocalypse is looking more and more like a possibility, I suppose some of the MSM outlets are becoming rightfully horrified. However, they need to own up to their part in it. Calling out Trumps myriad lies would be a good start.
