The Anti Counterfeit Trade Agreement has been defeated in the EU Parliament with 478 votes to 39. The Parliament decided to reject ACTA once and for all which was seen as a threat to internet freedom. The Trade Agreement is a multinational treaty aiming at fighting the "trade of counterfeit goods".
However it triggered widespread outcry across the world with many of its opponents accusing ACTA to have been secretly negotiated, threatening fundamental rights, freedom of expression and online privacy.
In February, thousands of people demonstrated throughout Europe against the treaty.
Rick Falkvinge, founder of the Swedish Pirate Party said "This is a day of celebration. This is the day when citizens of Europe and the world won over unelected bureaucrats who were being wooed and lobbied by the richest corporations of the planet" on his blog.

(42,239 posts)The European Parliament has voted to reject the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (Acta).
The proposed agreement sought to curb piracy, but internet campaigners said it posed a threat to online freedoms.
The rejection vote followed a failed attempt to postpone the decision because of ongoing investigations into Acta by the European Court of Justice.
Euro MP David Martin said: "It's time to give [Acta] its last rites."
