Ford Bronco officially coming back, will be made in Michigan
Source: MSN
You can credit (or blame) Donald Trump for this one. The presidential candidate has been relentless in attacking Ford for moving jobs to Mexico throughout his campaign. Ford has fired back, both with CEO Mark Fields on CNN, and on Twitter during the first debate, citing massive investment and job growth here in the United States. And now, because of this fight, we just got confirmation that the Bronco is coming back. Whether or not it looks at all like the rendering above remains to be seen.
Ford announced earlier this year that it will add four SUVs to the lineup, and it was widely assumed the Bronco would be one of those four. The theory stems from the latest contract between the UAW and Ford, and what happens to the Michigan Assembly Plant when the Focus and C-Max production move south of the border.

Yeah, because Ford changed their plans at the last minute because of Trump.

(129,228 posts)I had a 2005 Ford Escape for 9 years and never had any problem with it. I had considered getting the hybrid version as a replacement but by then they had completely redesigned the Escape (and the hybrid version became the C-Max) and IMHO they both looked like crap. If I wanted a Prius look-alike I'd get a Prius. I ended up getting an Explorer.

(129,228 posts)as a one up in size from the Escape, but decided I needed a bit more room and got the Explorer (2014). The Explorer actually has a 3rd row of seats and over the past year, I have kept the 3rd row folded down and have used that cargo space BIG TIME!! It has really saved me from having to stick anything on the roof. It did take me awhile to get used to the bigger profile of the car though. Yikes (but then at least it's not the Expedition. lol).

(3,316 posts)she was originally looking at the Chevy Trax but our neighbor owns a Ford dealership and I talked my mom into going with him
gave us a fantastic deal
I had taken her old car, a Malibu, to get the brakes fixed, and the sales guy was supposed to give me a trade-in estimate at the same time
when I mentioned it, he gave me the duh look; he said that he couldn't give me an estimate without clearing it first with his boss-the dealership owner-but he'd get in touch with me the next day; never called so I said screw them

(129,228 posts)I hear ya! Ya gotta do what you gotta do. Back before I got the Escape, I had a 16-year old Corsica and was considering a Blazer although most that were being offered were 2-door. At that time, GM and Chevy seemed to be in la la land with a lack of good choices and one of my sisters bought an Escape the year it came out so I ended up with one a few years later. Much better value at the time compared to the Grand Cherokee that I liked but couldn't quite afford then!

(15,289 posts)After Ford remodeled the Explorer to make it longer and lower. The old Escape had a ton of room in the hatch and even more with one or both of the back seats folded down. There's surprising room in the back seats even for bigger people. The CVT transmission gives it good gas mileage, too, nearly 30mph on the hwy even for the 6 cyl.
My neighbor just bought a used 2013, first year of the new design, and I didn't even recognize as an Escape. He said a friend gave him the cover you can pull over the hatch bay from his original design Escape, but it was too long meaning the cargo area is smaller.
The sad thing all the major car makers went the same route with their small SUVs. Even Jeep lost its distinctive look for the Cherokee.
BumRushDaShow
(129,228 posts)That is exactly why I ended up going for the Explorer. I loved the room in my Escape and since it was more boxy in the back, it was easy to get items in versus something with a smaller hatch opening and slant roof. The Explorer's cargo area with the 3rd row of seats up is small but not bad. With the 3rd row seats down, it's close to that of the old Escape with the 2nd row folded down.
The other thing about the newer Explorers is that they were designed by a former Land Rover designer and you can see the similarities to Land Rover's Range Rover (at an obviously cheaper price). You can see the difference between the newer ones and the original honkin' big Explorers! Still a good-sized, 16 ft long car that I had to get used to (including the increased horsepower when compared to the Escape), but it was the best investment (so far) that I have made - and this from someone who grew up in Ford station wagons during the '60s and '70s (and learned to drive on a Mercury Zephyr) and swore she would never buy a Ford!

(15,289 posts)I bought the very first year of the Explorer, my SUV was off-loaded from the truck and right into my hands.
It was a stick shift as well as manual shift into 4WD and manual locking hubs! It was awesome to drive with all those pedals and shifters. A ton of room in the back without even folding the seats. I had a couple more before Ford decided to redesign it. That's when I bought my first Escape.

(2,959 posts)Quality-wise, it was a piece of garbage. Over $600/year in brakes alone.
But, I loved the car for its form-factor, its performance, and the fact that it had a 23 gallon gas tank and I could get 500+ miles on a tank. The Ford Explorer was more or less the replacement for the Bronco II.
I'd like to see Ford come out with a modern version of a Bronco II. Really engineer it for high gas mileage, but try to mimic the old form factor and performance as much as possible.
Oh, and improve the build and design quality a bit.

(30,151 posts)NO DOORS, NO SEAT BELTS, NO WINDSHIELD + 180MPH.... Someone's got some balls! This is what happens when you have a close ass race and no one wants to lift! The LSx Willys pairs up against a Z06 and a damn good race! A few other races with a C7 Supercharged Corvette and an FD Mazda RX7 featured as well!

(8,692 posts)The Ranger was sort of in this space in that it was competitive with the Jeep, but that is a huge gaping hole in their product line.

America should be moving away from the gas guzzling tradition.
In a few years nobody will want those machines.
If you believe restarting an industry that relies on fossil fuel extraction, transport and production is the right way to go for America, then you have been brainwashed and need to go see a good de-programmer.
we're all effing brainwashed.

(129,228 posts)as I frequent a Ford forum and have heard about the Bronco for awhile... Because most of the Ford "SUVs" were redesigned over the years to become "Crossovers" (built on a car chassis vs a truck chassis, probably to reduce weight and meet mileage standards), it will be interesting to see if they have this go back to the SUV's original roots.
DeminPennswoods
(15,289 posts)because there's no real difference in any Ford car these days. I'm wondering if the sales of the Escape haven't tanked since Ford made into a crossover.
BumRushDaShow
(129,228 posts)because they already had the Edge with the "crossover" design (aimed at those who did not want to go the minivan route) and it seemed to be a good compromise between the smaller Escape (as a utility vehicle) and the bigger Explorer. But maybe it was also because of the insane gas prices at the time as well trying to really downsize to compete with something like the Suburu Forester.
DeminPennswoods
(15,289 posts)But now the Suburu Forrester and all the other former SUVs all look like the same crossover car.
