Fake fliers passed out at Bates College in apparent voter suppression effort

Source: Bangor Daily News

LEWISTON, Maine — Sometime Saturday, orange fliers appeared at a number of Bates College dorms and at the school’s dining hall claiming to be a “Legal Advisory” for Bates students.

The fliers told students, falsely, that “to register and vote in Lewiston, you must pay to change your driver’s license to Lewiston, Maine, within 30 days” and “pay to re-register any vehicle you have in Lewiston.”

They also pointed out that registering a vehicle requires passing an inspection and usually costs hundreds of dollars.

“They’re all over the place,” said senior Meghan Lynch, though students had ripped most down by Sunday afternoon.

... but the townies are more typical Mainers. Guess they didn't want those liberal college kids messing up their election.

I hate all republicans. They are scum of the earth. If I could I would banish them all to another planet.

13. Bates students, or really all college-aged people in general, are not this dumb

Once the cover is blown on this bullshit car registration scam, it will pass around social media within the hour. This is the kind of thing that might have made a dent 20 years ago when word-of-mouth might not have been so quick to get the word around.

Some Cheetos-tinted Hitler follower, white,early-to-mid-50s actually thought this would work...

http://www.bates.edu/president/2016/11/07/information-about-election-day-and-registering-to-vote/

part of the statement:

Further guidance from the Office of Maine’s Secretary of State clearly states that “you can establish a voting residence at your Maine school address if you have a present intention to remain at that address for the time being, whether that residence is a dorm, apartment, house or even a hotel. Maine law expressly provides that you will not gain or lose residency solely because of your presence in or absence from the state while attending school, and this provision may not be interpreted ‘to prevent a student at any institution of learning from qualifying as a voter’ in the town ‘where the student resides while attending’ that school.”

In other words, many Bates students are eligible to register and vote in the City of Lewiston. Any unofficial communications that suggest otherwise are contrary to the ideals of American democracy. You may review official election information issued by the State of Maine at http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/voter-info/resident.html.

Participation in the electoral process is a right and a civic duty. If you are eligible to vote, I strongly encourage you to do so on Tuesday.
