Members of group honoring FBI boss have longtime Trump ties

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) -- FBI Director James Comey, already criticized over his handling of Hillary Clinton's email investigation in the final days of the presidential campaign, was accepting a lifetime achievement award Monday night at a dinner organized by a law enforcement support group whose board includes three people with longtime ties to Donald Trump.

Comey was being honored by the nonprofit Federal Drug Agents Foundation. It lists more than three dozen board directors on its website, and three of its members have extensive ties to Trump. Among them: the CEO of the company that publishes The National Enquirer, the developer of a Trump-branded tower in Toronto and a convicted felon whose company rates Trump businesses for luxury.

After all, lead with the lead or at least the fun stuff, thanks AP eds.

And kids, here's a fun game you can play at home. Try replacing the phrase "ties to Donald Trump" with "ties to the mob" and the article still works. Crazy magic!

NEW YORK (AP) -- FBI Director James Comey was honored Monday night by a group whose board includes several people with longtime ties to Donald Trump, including the CEO of the National Enquirer and a convicted felon who goes by the nickname "Joey No Socks."

...

A third board member is Joseph Cinque, also known as "Joey No Socks," a convicted felon whose American Academy of Hospitality Sciences has awarded more than a dozen Trump businesses with shiny plaques called "Star Diamond" awards. Cinque didn't immediately return a request for comment, but a secretary at his business said he was planning on attending the Monday evening ceremony.

Trump told the AP in May he didn't know Cinque well and was unaware of his criminal history. Court records show Cinque pleaded guilty in 1989 to possession of stolen property. According to a 1995 New York Magazine profile he pleaded guilty to a felony after police discovered stolen art in his apartment.

More than a dozen Donald Trump golf courses, hotels, casinos and private clubs have been honored with "Star Diamond" awards from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, a company that doles out shiny plaques representing "the most prestigious award of true excellence in hospitality."

The Trump Grill at Trump Tower has one. So does the Trump Buffet & Grill in the basement. Indeed the entire New York City skyscraper sports one of the plaques, for being "the ultimate residential building worldwide."

...

But Trump told The Associated Press on Friday that he doesn't know Cinque well and was unaware of Cinque's criminal conviction.

"If a guy's going to give you an award, you take it," Trump said. "You don't tend to look up his whole life story."

Or maybe try this one (wowie wow wow, that crazy google!):

How a convicted felon nicknamed ‘Joey No Socks’ covered Donald Trump in stars

It’s about as Trump as a moment gets. There was the Donald at his new golf club in the rolling Scottish dunes. He was holding a massive, gleaming, gold-colored plaque proclaiming the venue “The Best Golf Course Worldwide.” Trump, the real estate mogul and now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, wore a hat with his name on it and a massive grin.

The gaudy plaque Trump carried that day in 2013 was a Star Diamond award distributed by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences — a group that turns out to have extensive ties with Trump.

Joseph Cinque, the academy’s president and CEO, personally presented the award to Trump in Scotland. It was one of many similar honors Cinque has bestowed upon him in the past decade. Cinque, who has been described by the academy as one of Trump’s “dear friends,” is also a convicted felon who reportedly survived a murder attempt, was associated with the infamous mob boss John Gotti and went on to earn the nicknames “Joey No Socks” and “the Preppy Don.”
