A driver, who has an Arabic name, picked a man up just before midnight in the Haymarket and planned to drive him to the Pla Mor Ballroom, Lincoln Police Capt. Bob Farber said. The man sat in the front seat and began asking the 26-year-old driver personal questions about his family and ethnicity, Farber said.
The driver declined to answer his questions, saying he wasn't supposed to comment on those matters, Farber said. Upset at this, the passenger began yelling racial insults at the driver and called him an "illegal alien," Farber said.
That's when the driver called 911 and pulled over at the Lancaster County Jail, Farber said.
The man then punched the driver in the face, while the driver tried to block him and push him away, police said.
