ROMNEY CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR: PEOPLE WHO ARE QUESTIONING MITTS TAX RETURNS ARE SUPPORTING SOCIALISM | During an appearance on MSNBC Wednesday morning, Carlos Gutierrez, a Romney senior adviser and Honorary Co-Chair of his National Hispanic Steering Committee, said that questioning the GOP presidential candidates reluctance to turn over his tax returns and come clean about his investments in foreign countries amounts to socialism. Responding to a segment during which Democratic strategist Karen Finney raised concerns about some of Romneys offshore accounts, Gutierrez said, if you are attacking capitalism, then I suppose that we are supporting socialism.

Apparently the definition of "socialism" is vast and varied.

ROMNEY CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR: PEOPLE WHO ARE QUESTIONING MITTS TAX RETURNS ARE SUPPORTING COMMUNISM"
Can't you just hear them trying to brainstorm their talking point on this.. trying to come up with something, anything that insinuates its somehow "unpatriotic" to question Mitt's refusal to release his tax returns.
The statement by Mr. Gutierrez doesn't even make sense!

(21,925 posts)If this is the agreed-on approach it indicates that they are pretty desperate to come up with a defense. John McCain who wanted Romney's tax returns to vet him as a possible VP in 2008 must be a hardened Marxist. Or is it okay for McCain to vet Romney but not okay for the American electorate to do the same?

Of course you can criticise capitalism, especially certain ways of doing it (eg using tax havens to dodge tax) without being a socialist; typically people who are general supporters of capitalism do when taking the maximum possible profit becomes the only goal.

(6,581 posts)If that is his definition of socialism then so be it. I remember various IRS programs to crack down on tax fraud coming down under R as well as D administrations and Congresses.

There used to be a description for people who said these sorts of things: Ranting Loons.

And BTW, it's not "free" ---people pay high taxes to get these things, but at least they get some real benefits for their taxes. Not like here, where if you can't afford health care, tough luck and you're living on the street if your illness bankrupts you.
