Swedish towns told to 'make preparations regarding the threat of war and conflict' with Russia

Sweden’s towns and villages have been ordered to make preparations for a possible military attack in the latest sign of the country’s growing anxiety at its newly belligerent Russian neighbour.

The country’s Civil Contingency Agency (MSB) last week sent a letter to local authorities across the country asking them to maintain operations centres in underground bunkers, ensure that a system of emergency sirens is in place, and to be open to cooperating on war exercises with the Swedish Armed Forces.

“In a state of war, civil defence for municipalities is no different from any of the other services they should provide,” the letter read, instructing local governments to “ensure their ability to maintain their functions during disturbed situations, and at the most extreme, in a war scenario.”

The dramatic call comes as Sweden returns to the Total Defence Strategy it maintained during the Cold War, reconstituting its old coastal anti-ship missile system, placing an armoured division on the exposed Baltic island of Gotland, and making plans to restart compulsory conscription as early as 2018.

Olof Palme's government, supposedly "neutral" had decided on a stance leaning toward the Soviet Union, a sort of half-hearted and poorly thought-out (though somewhat deserved) response to Reagan's belligerent stance.

The Swedish nave started to detect ever bolder intrusions by unknown submarines into their coastal waters, and the official line was that it "had" to have been aggressive moves by NATO (i.e. USA) craft. That is, until one of them ran aground on a shoal somewhere. Oops, it was a Soviet submarine. When their newspapers showed photos of it with a red star and a hammer and sickle insignia, even Palme had to admit "det var sovietisk (it was Soviet)."

"He was an outspoken politician, popular with the left and detested by the right. Two years after his death a petty criminal and drug addict was convicted of his murder but was later acquitted on appeal... to this day the crime remains unsolved.

Prompted by Olaf Palme's assassination (Feb 28, 1986), Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson called an investigation into the procedures of the Swedish Security Police (Sapo) in the fall of 1987. Carl Lidbom, then swedish ambassador to France, was given the task of leading the investigation. One of his old acquaintances, the publisher Ebbe Carlsson, firmly believed that the Kurdish organization PKK was involved in the murder and was given resources to start a private investigation. The Ebbe Carlsson affair exploded as a major political scandal in 1988, when it was revealed that the publisher had been secretly supported by the then minister of justice, Anna-Greta Leijon. She was subsequently forced to resign.

Informationsbyran (IB) was a secret intelligence agency without official status within the Swedish armed forces. Its main purpose was to gather information about communists and other individuals who were perceived to be a threat to the nation. It was thought that these findings were passed on to key politicians at cabinet level, most likely the defence minister at the time, Sven Andersson, and Prime Minister Olaf Palme. The exposure of the agency's operations by journalists Jan Guillou and Peter Bratt in the magazine Folket i Bild/Kulturfront in 1973 became known as the IB affair. "

...festivities and the children were no longer there, the topic turned serious to what is happening with the pending coronation of Trump. The wife Henrietta is actually half Finnish and she was having conversations too with her father and family back in Finland and everyone is really worried, especially with the news about Russia and Putins involvement in the hacking of our election. They have no doubt that Putin is already planning his grab for the Baltics and that Trump will be his puppet and not back NATO against him. It was a very sobering conversation. We agreed it was likely similar to conversations had in past century with conversations then about Hitler and Germany. But they explained that concerns of Russia were greater than concerns about Germany was at the time of the beginning of WW ii because Russia has been seen as far greater threat always. They said people are praying something stops Trump from ascending to the Throne. The electoral college role was discussed and even whether President Obama could do anything. Impeachment.

It was a somber conversation on what was otherwise to have been a happy evening. We discussed where was safe in world...realizing ikely no where...

Washington (CNN)US Marines are coming to Norway -- a move that could send a chill down Russian President Vladimir Putin's spine.

The move, which was sought by the Americans and announced Monday by Norway, comes as tensions between the US and Russia are increasing amid the humanitarian disaster in Syria and US assertions of Moscow's involvement in cyber hacks on American political organizations and individuals.

Beginning in January, a limited rotational force of approximately 330 Marines will be located in Vaernes, Norway, according to a statement to CNN from the Norwegian Defense Ministry.

"The US initiative to augment their training and exercises in Norway by locating a Marine Corps Rotational Force in Norway is highly welcome and will have positive implications for our already

U.S. Deploys Tanks to Bolster Force in Europe Army restocks Cold War-era Dutch depot as deterrent to Russia By Julian E. Barnes

December 16th, 2016 ruthfullyyours/WSJ

EYGELSHOVEN, Netherlands—The U.S. Army reopened a Cold War-era storage facility here on Thursday and began restocking it with tanks, part of the American effort to return heavy weaponry to Europe in the face of Russia’s military buildup.

The U.S. Army is moving to put in place congressionally approved military forces in Europe, including rotating a heavy brigade into Europe beginning in January. In early spring, units from North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies will begin moving into the Baltic states.

“Three years ago, the last American tank left Europe; we all wanted Russia to be our partner,” said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the commander of U.S. Army Europe. “My country is bringing tanks back…as part of our commitment to deterrence in Europe.”

The annual defense authorization act, passed by Congress with veto-proof majorities, approved a $3.4 billion spending plan to boost European defenses including reopening or creating five equipment-storage sites in the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium and two locations in Germany.
