SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Patricia Krenwinkel, once a devout follower of cult killer Charles Manson and now the longest-serving female inmate in California, appeared again Thursday before a parole board 47 years after she helped kill pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people.
Krenwinkel, 69, has been denied parole 13 times since her conviction in the 1969 slayings.
She acknowledged during her trial that she chased down and repeatedly stabbed Abigail Ann Folger, the 26-year-old heiress of a coffee fortune, at Tates home and helped kill grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, the following night.
Los Angeles County prosecutors say Krenwinkel carved the word war into Leno LaBiancas stomach, then wrote Helter Skelter in blood on the couples refrigerator.

(1,132 posts)in the slayings, she'd serve the sentence she so richly deserves without making a peep. Instead she asks to be released every few years. Fuck off.

(2,993 posts)I'm asking out of curiosity. The crimes occurred when I was very small, so I never really followed this closely.

Leslie participated by stabbing an already dead body (according to her testimony).
Patricia actively murdered Abigail Folger.
Chased her down and may have stabbed her all 28 times,
Its hard to know for sure of course.
Atkins already dead, Watson and Krenwinkle need to die in prison.
oh and Manson who is happy to.

(14,174 posts)After 47 years and being 69, and considering that the only time she killed was under a cult leaders influence, I think there is zero chance she is set to go on a killing spree if they released her. So its about revenge now. But even revenge must have a limit.
I believe there is good in every person, call me a bleeding heart liberal lug. That is what opposition to the death penalty is all about. She has had many many years to think about what she did and in spite of another comment here that says she is not remorseful, she sounds like she was and is to me. The fact is she most likely never would have ever been involved in murder if she had not run into Manson. It was an awful crime but she has paid her dues. Her life has been all but taken away. This goes for Leslie too.
I guess I think it would be right to allow her to live out her last days with the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the world, to know that the universe is not still set on retribution against her until her last breath treating her like she is a nonredeemable soul.
I don't know, after awhile it seems like beating someone over and over for a long ago crime when they were young until your arm gets tired and you can't get anymore blood out of the carcass, maybe you should stop and allow this, small though it may be, good part of her to be released along with her physical body. It can't be all about hate and revenge.

(7,770 posts)I remember having compassion for that Lindy whatever her name was that did torture in Iraq. Everybody wanted her HANGED on DU. (torture ruins the torturer as well-she wasn't born that way like a serial killer-very little compassion here on DU-just the easy Fuck her which is actually right wing in my opinion) Well you know what. I do have sympathy for those kids that did wrong. Redemption and rectifying things may never happen. But yeah-I get compassion. It's like someone that was mentally ill-they never get another chance if they committed a murder. The right wing believes in no mercy-no mentally ill status-and even if your 15-well you rot in jail forever. I think every case should be seen in it's own light. This is a hard one to have compassion for though.

(14,308 posts)I think if it was me, I would so want to do something positive in my life.
I don't know anything about what she thinks now, but I would think by now she is thinking she can't believe how awful she was 47 years ago.
I would want to do something to show that there was some good in me. I would understand them not even letting me out in general society, but an opportunity to plant trees, pick up trash, grow peanuts, anything to feel I made some contribution to the world, other than being a bad example.

(20,202 posts)But at 69, what kind of life would she have outside of prison? I don't know what the absolute lowest Social Security payment is, but I'm sure it isn't enough to really live on. I would think 3 hots and a cot would be better.
But then, I've never been in prison.

(4,150 posts)It was appalling and terrifying. The randomness of the act made it even more frightening.
When all was said & done, there wasn't much relief to be had, as what REALLY had happened was much more terrifying than anybody had imagined. The Manson trial was pretty riveting.
In any case, Patricia Krenwinkel is an old woman now, and she is not in good health. She is no threat to society at this point, and I can't imagine that holding her until her death will do any more good for society.
Yes she brutally killed at least two people, and she owes a debt not only to her victims and their families but also to society. But even if she died in prison, she has ALREADY spent her entire life there for all practical purposes. As for the original sentence-- I think it was the death penalty that was later commuted to life--I am not at all convinced that there is any justice to be served. After all, how could she EVER pay for what she did? I'm not saying that she shouldn't have been punished, nor am I arguing about her sentence; I'm just saying that at this point, will justice EVER be served?
I'm not even saying that she 'deserves' anything. She really lost that privilege when she decided to murder people with a knife. I guess what I'm trying to say that as a society, do we need to keep an old murderer in prison until her last breath? I respect those who say yes, as I do understand their disgust with the nature and brutality of the crime.
