The teenage son of a Kansas congressman flummoxed the speaker of the US house of representatives by dabbing during a photo call at his swearing in.
Paul Ryan believed Cal Marshall, the 17-year-old son of Roger Marshall, was about to sneeze when he moved his face down to his forearm while he and his family posed for photographs at Tuesdays swearing in.
He was in fact dabbing: a viral dance move popularised by US athletes and rappers, and embraced by teenagers as an irreverent or celebratory gesture.
Video footage shows Cal Marshall determinedly doing the dab despite Ryans attempts to dissuade him.

I keep saying, our youth... they're the ones that are going to lead us out of this hell.

(58,785 posts)(LOL, of course), says it was old long ago. Frankly, as usual I missed the whole thing, even Hillary's version. Charming boy, and I think he handled Ryan's clueless and intrusive "You all right?" and "can you put your hand down?" really well.

(50,269 posts)None of us are Paul Ryan fans, but it's a serious moment that should be treated with an iota of respect. This is an illustration of how freaking stupid a good chunk of the population is and why Republicans have the majority in Congress and the White House.

(6,926 posts)I am sure no one is surprised that Ryan is clueless about anything in popular culture.
In the 90s I encountered an MD where I worked who had no idea who Jimmy Buffett was. This guy was maybe 3 years older than me. Never heard of any titles of Buffett songs. He could only list religious titles. We grilled him about Elvis and the Beatles. We ended the encounter while humming....Why don't we get drunk and screw.....totally went past him.
I will admit that I know very little about popular music today but I was tuned in to what was popular in my teens and 20s......this guy was clueless.
