Kentucky GOP files new abortion ban: The only 'choice' women have is 'to conceive or not conceive'

Source: RawStory

For the first time in 95 years, Republicans took total control over the Kentucky state government this week and immediately moved to strip rights from women and workers.

According to the Courier-Journal, a 20-week abortion ban is one of the first 11 bills being considered by the GOP-controlled legislature.

Republican Senate President Robert Stivers told reporters on Tuesday that women relinquished their reproductive “choice” by getting pregnant in the first place.

Stivers said that a woman had a “choice early on to make a decision to conceive or not conceive. But once conception starts, there becomes another life involved. And the legislature has its ability to control how that life may proceed or how it would be terminated,” he stated.

have much of a chance at this point. I don't have a clue about what to do about it anymore.

Always remember what sNewty said when he was bout to become Screecher of the House,
he was asked by an NPR reporter about his $4million book deal w/Rupert Murdoch and the appearance of impropriety since Murdoch was embroiled in a federal lawsuit at the time sNewty replied,

"So Mr. Murdoch has a problem with the rules, we'll change the rules and then there won't be a problem."

It never aired again, and immediately the war on PBS/NPR began with funding cuts and attempts to destroy these public services and the corporation for public broadcasting was born... as a corp., they couldn't be destroy by Congressional decree. They've declined in quality ever since.

this is the breaking point of two decades of slippage, starting with the Nwet years you reference, by this country.

We have seen the republican party slowly assimilate more power in DC an the states at the same time they have become exponentially more bold and radical, and they were raging assholes to start with in the 90s.

The problems is that the people of this country are now in three fairly evenly divided camps.

Us, the 1/3 who deal in reality, have a civil and accepting mindset and can't fathom us being where we are now.

Republicans, 1/3 of people who either are full on or have some component of their mind that is hateful, that are full on board with republicans doing what they are doing.

The few "independents" and other apolitical types who are the 1/3 that are willing to accept whatever fuckwittery that the Rs engage in because they believe in whatever form of the evil liberal boogyman that gets foisted into the soft melons.

We are flat fucked, there is absolutely not energy to push back on the Rs at this point.

was that it's about time that women become pro-active about this. No real choice, no sex. I know that doesn't take anything else into account, but how long would those lawmakers promote these dumb things their constituents' wives were withholding sex because of it. Trouble is, in so many cases the women are as stupid as the men and agree with this horseshit.

This is unconstitutional according to Roe v Wade, and all they will do is cost taxpayer's money to try to defend this.

the second or third thing men can't do without, in their minds, is sex. I recall some woman in MI legislature told men who were starting this process of taking away women's hard earned rights... and I'm paraphrasing- ...if you can't handle what we need in the way of reproductive health care and we are so detestable, then stop having sex with us.

Women should refuse to have any physical contact with men until they pull their stupid heads out of their asses, including those who are married and have a husband who gets it or a SO who gets it... they need to educate the rest, then they can go back to normal. Until all women are accepted as complete humans, there should be no sexual gratification for men.

that sex really should be a natural and enjoyable thing for everyone. The politicizing of sex the way we have is unnatural and no good can come out of it. What is in the minds of people who are, for lack of a better phrase, against sex? Why? What do they care if people engage in an activity that can be consensual and enjoyable?

I have never liked the notion of giving or denying sex used as a power tool. That reminds me of the horrible Patricia Heaton character on "Everybody Loves Raymond", which was also apparently her real-life view ("if a man won't wash the dishes, withhold sex!&quot

And who's to say all men enjoy sex more than all women? Note: I understand why you are making this point. But I'm beginning to wonder if we aren't creating a world where sex is only used as a tool.

Will condoms be made illegal? What about vasectomies? Will men only be allowed to have sex for the sole purpose of conception? Are they prepared to be required to support the results (birth of that "other life&quot for the next 18-+ years? I'm fully aware the underlying reason for this Kentucky law is to assure men have total control over women, but again, I often wonder how male citizens feel about it and understand how it could affect their lives, actions and future.

Why, please why, does any man want to create any situation that makes women less sexually available? Seems to me real men--not the neutered god-pod people who currently rule over us--would do everything they could to make contraception, abortion and sex education readily available while radically expanding sexual freedom.

In my utopia, boys get reversible vasectomies at 12, to be reversed only after age 25 and extensive training and certification in parenting skills. And there's a morning after pill for guys.

But we live in Jesusland, not Mindpilotville.

ETA I have come to the opinion that there should not be an absolute right to create another human. Like many other things, a certain skill level and means are necessary to make more people.

The part about extensive training and certification in parenting skills should definitely be required for anyone, male/female, considering making more people. I'll vote for that! Unless there is a conviction for the rape, of course. Given that most victims don't report these crimes (for a variety of reasons that mostly often boil down to legitimate fear of retaliation) let alone get a conviction (only 18% of those reported are convicted), the Kentucky GOP is ensuring that those rape babies have more rights than the victims they want to force to carry to term.

I should probably mention that Kentucky had a rape kit backlog several thousand deep in spring of last year.

Mandatory vasectomies for all males when they hit 16. Sperm samples can be stored in case they and their partners decide to become parents at a later date. Hey - it seems to work for livestock.

It will certainly cut down on the number of abortions, and maybe Kentucky can use Obamacare funds to store the samples - oh, wait...

I'm fully support of abortion rights and truly fear the right wing social agenda, but this is Kentucky, which might as well be the capital of Dumbfuckistan. The people of Kentucky, including its women, overwhelmingly are dumbfucks who continue to vote against their own interests and support Republicans. I don't give a damn about them if they don't. The only way the pendulum swings back to the left is if those voters who peristently vote against their own interests to support Republicans suffer as the result of Republican policies.

Kentucky moves toward requiring ultrasound before abortion

By Steve Bittenbender | LOUISVILLE, KY.

Kentucky's newly sworn-in Republican House majority on Thursday took the first step toward requiring women seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound first, acting swiftly to capitalize on winning a majority for the first time in almost a century.

The 83-12 vote on the bill came on the third day of the state's 2017 General Assembly session, the first in which the Republican Party has led the House since 1921.

The bill requires a physician or qualified technician to perform the ultrasound and position the screen so the woman may view the images. At the same time, the medical staff will be required to describe what the images show, including the size of the fetus and any organs or appendages visible.

Sponsors say the bill will better protect the health of women and provide the materials necessary for women to make an informed choice, while abortion rights advocates contend such laws are designed to scare and shame those seeking an abortion.

It is a right to make your own medical decisions for your body. If someone doesn't like that, they can express their opinion and not partake, but their religious view doesn't trump the right to make your own medical decisions.

It's time to stop kowtowing to people claiming a religious need to restrict our rights. ISIS claims the same damn thing. And that's how we need to treat the trash that wants to take our rights away. Treat them like ISIS agents. Be aggressive - be brutal, because they don't have values - they have objectives. To accept that these fuckers have values is to admit ISIS has values.
