Chuck Schumer Hits Back After Donald Trump Calls Him A 'Clown'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published JANUARY 5, 2017, 12:29 PM EDT

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Thursday morning knocked Donald Trump for calling him a "clown" over Schumer's Wednesday comments about Republican plans to repeal Obamacare.

"I’d say to President-elect (sic) that this is serious, serious stuff. People’s health is at stake, and people’s lives are at stake," Schumer told reporters on Capitol Hill when asked about Trump's comments.

The President-elect called Schumer a "clown" in a tweet early Thursday morning and blasted Democrats for not working with Republicans on a plan to replace Obamacare. The tweet followed Wednesday comments from Schumer that Democrats will wait to see Republicans' Obamacare replacement plan.

On Thursday, Schumer again called out Republicans for not yet having a plan to replace Obamacare.

If I had known it wasn't working I would have stopped using it a couple of years ago.

Funny thing, this happened to me before. For 5 years I drank hot water with cream and sugar. Then somebody pointed out that the coffee maker didn't work. It's a good thing we have republicans to help us with these sorts of things.

But sometimes, I think the only way to fight back to something like this is to fire back the same shit. At the very least, call him a Putin puppet or something.

But it has to have a zing. Seems if it doesn't, it doesn't have the same perceived effect.

But then we would be lowering ourselves to the gutter. It's all so surreal. I don't know anymore....

14. Name calling is Trump's way of delegitimizing someone

His favorite way.

He knocked out 18 Republicans, helped a great deal by coining derogatory names for each of them, and repeating them over and over and over.

This "clown" stuff is his start on delegitimizing the Senate Democrats by calling their leader, Schumer, a clown.

The repetition of the derogatory name is key. Repeat three times, after a few days repeat three times. Beginning, middle and end of a speech - repeat derogatory phrase three times close together each time. Do this over and over and over. This is a fundamental technique used in successful propaganda programs.

And POTUS Trump name-calling when there IS important policy happening.

People are paying attention to health care.

It may play well to a minority. But this is serious and Schumer can easily throw it back on Trump.
