SYDNEY, Australia, January 15, 2017 (ENS) Hours after Australias Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull smiled for a photo with Japans Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Sydney on Saturday, Japanese whalers were caught killing whales in the icy waters of the Australian Whale Sanctuary off Antarctica.
After five weeks of searching the Southern Ocean, a ship from the nonprofit Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has located the Japanese factory whaling vessel in the Australian Whale Sanctuary with a dead minke whale on its deck.
hese are the first photographs documenting the Japanese whalers killing of whales since the International Court of Justice ruled their whaling program illegal in 2014, and the Australian Federal Court found the Japanese whaling industry in contempt for killing protected whales in the Australian Whale Sanctuary.
. . .
When the helicopter approached, the Nisshin Maru crew rushed to hide the dead whale with a tarp, while the fleets harpoon ships Yushin Maru and Yushin Maru #2 covered their harpoons.

The anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd claims a Japanese ship has slaughtered a minke whale in Australia's Antarctic waters.
The group released photos it says show the whale on board the vessel Nisshin Maru inside the Australian Whale Sanctuary on Sunday.
It comes two days after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Sydney to bolster defence ties with Australia.
Japan's whaling has been ruled illegal by the Australian Federal Court.

(33,982 posts)And the 'industry' is declining and will be gone soon. They are also not bound by the ICRW.
Iceland also joined 'under objection' but it's more contentious as to whether Iceland is exempt from the IRCW.
Japan on the other hand has been all 'FUCK THE WORLD WE DO WHAT WE WANT' and rules gaming as 'scientific research' exemptions, etc. So yeah, people are pissed off about it. They're also taking a lot more than Norway (Who actually sells most of their take to Japan, by the by.)
