Members are trying to deny Obama entry to an exclusive country club

The mayor of Somerset, Maryland, quit his exclusive country club yesterday citing Martin Luther King, Jr.s words. The country club has been embroiled in a debate over whether to allow President Obama to join in his retirement.
Obama has not applied for membership to Woodmont Country Club, which costs $80,000 to apply to and $9,600 in yearly fees, but Politico recently highlighted the club as a possible golf spot for the retired president.
Woodmont was founded in 1913 when Jews were often not accepted in other clubs. The club has remained predominantly Jewish.
The controversy has centered on Obamas position on Israel/Palestine. The Washington Post obtained an email from lifelong member Faith Goldstein: He is not welcome at Woodmont. His admittance would create a storm that could destroy our club. Other members have called Obamas possible membership inconceivable because of his position on Israel/Palestine.

(18,652 posts)As I said to a friend, this issue has been going on since the Old Testament times when the Palestinians were known as the Philistines. I doubt Woodmont can figure it out

(46,092 posts)Of a golf club founded based on antisemitism is discriminating on the basis of a finite number of members with a restricted viewpoint of Israel. Are they going to kick out reform Jews who don't believe in settlements?

(2,297 posts)The Jewish only beach clubs started up because there was nowhere for a Jew to join. I could not even enter as a guest, I think that there were 4 clubs, then someone started a club right next to them that did not allow Jews. That club even went so far as to eventually ban a long time member that married a Jew. The really bizarre part was that all the clubs were pleased with the status quo. Very few people wanted to rock the boat. This was not that long ago either.

But an even bigger surprise I discovered in my research is that these common memories of grandpapas application for membership being turned down for ethnic reasons generally didnt involve Jews trying to get into gentile country clubs. Instead, Eastern European Jews were typically shot down by German Jewish country clubs who saw the nouveau riche immigrant Jews as pushy and crass Al Czerviks.
Sports Illustrated reported in 1962:
In larger cities one sometimes finds two or more Jewish clubs, the top one composed principally of German Jews who tend to find eastern European Jews unacceptable.
For example, Birmingham, Alabama long supported two standoffish Jewish country clubs. According to the Encyclopedia Judaica:
Since Jews were frozen out of local country clubs, they established the Hillcrest in 1883 for German Jews, and the Fairmont in 1920, for East European Jews. They merged in 1969, forming the Pine Tree Country Club, which opened its membership to non-Jews in 1991.
Stephen Birmingham writes:
But now, in nearly every American city of any size, there were at least two Jewish country clubsthe good one (German), and the less good (Russian). In New York, the best Jewish country club was the Germans Century Country Club in suburban White Plains [now Purchase]. The second-best was the Russians Sunningdale Golf Club in Scarsdale.

(15,381 posts)Is the death of golf clubs. According to all the articles on things that Millenials are supposedly ruining, golf is one of them because they're not playing it at the level previous generations did. I'm for what George Carlin suggested - turn them into housing for the poor.

For the money you spend joining and staying a golf club, you can fly somewheres, see the world and experience much more.
HoneyBadger
(2,297 posts)Tough to do that with style unless you are a member. There are some sorts of Groupon type deals that let you play a few different clubs around the world, but maybe once a year, that makes getting better harder. If you are in sales, you need to be a member of a desirable club that your clients want to play at. If you like golf and don't have a plane, why would you fly around the world to play?
KittyWampus
(55,894 posts)you don't need a plane.
But I do see where certain businesses make having a golf club membership essentially a requirement.

(3,051 posts)When a president, or former president, golfs, the Secret Service basically shuts down the golf course and members get pat downs and searches for weapons. Plus, you have wingnuts who show up and protest, cause trouble, and generally screw things up. It's intrusive and not what you want when you join a golf course.
So, it's a pain in the ass.
But, on the bright side, I am rather excited that we Jews get to exclude someone from a country club for once. We've made it! It's the American Dream! (Yes, joking.)
