Although no reason was given for Kerrys decision, the announcement comes after scores of Democrats in the House of Representatives also indicated that they would not be attending the Inauguration. Kerry, the former Democratic nominee for President, told CNNs Christiane Amanpour this week that is is inappropriate for the President-elect to criticize our NATO partners around the world, even defending German Chancellor Angela Merkel from Trumps rebuke.
This story is developing and we will update as more becomes known.

(53,778 posts)Out of the last 5 presidential campaigns repugs cheated to "win" 3 of them.
Our priority from now on should be to combat vigorously to expose and stop their cheating tricks.

(5,730 posts)Elections have historically had dirty tricks and some cheating, which one would think we had evolved from, just like we have socially. However, in the last couple of decades, the millions of dollars spent to discredit someone (Citizens United intended to enable that even more), by deliberate egregious fabrication, I do believe has become interference with the election process. Evidently, it is a part of our fabric now. Given that 1/2 the country gets its "news" from Foxaganda, or worse, the populous is so dumbed down, I wonder what the solution will be. Maybe, like Rome, our hubris will give way to our decline. I hear it often from people around the world.

(59,503 posts)I doubt that President Obama would tell him not to come -- and he reports to no one else now-- and in fact, at the inauguration, he would be citizen Kerry as he has spoken of for months. He will no longer be in government.

(58,785 posts)approve Trump's scary blatherings but that a public statement of disapproval is called for. The refusal of our SecState to attend the inauguration will be noted in nearly 200 nations.

(59,503 posts)Where he has had multiple meetings, speeches and interviews everywhere - list to speeches, interviews etc https://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2017/index.htm -- not including that there were also meetings. Like all his trips, it is a wonder that he can make it through the schedule that he has taken on.
Today is the last day of that trip and this morning he was in Switzerland. https://www.state.gov/secretary/travel/2017k/k1/index.htm
This is his last trip. The public schedule is just for the day - and past days, but I would imagine that he might be saying good bye to people at the State Department tomorrow.
The various articles noted that it was not uncommon that departing cabinet members not attend an inauguration. He is after all no longer in the government at that point.

Seriously though, good decision on John Kerry's part. Why would he when the man is evidently trying to bring chaos back?
