Mormons and African Americans still face substantial prejudice, poll finds
Source: The Washington Post
Substantial prejudice still exists for both Mormons and African Americans, despite shifting views on both groups since Barack Obama and Mitt Romney first ran for president four years ago.
Sizable pockets of voters say they would be uncomfortable with a close family member marrying someone who is black or Mormon, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, with Mormons facing slightly more distrust from people outside their community.
Twenty percent of voters report discomfort with the idea of a Mormon marrying into their immediate family; 14 percent say the same for African Americans. . For blacks, proximity appears key: Whites living in communities with few or no African Americans are more apt to express uneasiness than those in more diverse communities. That geographic distinction seems to matter less for Mormons.

(18,421 posts)Because being Black isn't something static and unchangable like being Mormon. Because being Black isn't obvious like being Mormon.
I'll tell you what's really going on. Be Mormon all you want. Seriously. It doesn't matter. But this is really about a bunch of people claiming that just because others are irritated when they try to thrust their views onto politics that they are being discriminated against.
Bull shit.
Whatever you want to feel in your heart and act like in your person is great and fine by me. But cry me a river if you claim discrimination because I don't find your beliefs to be legitimate or valuable in any way shape or form in our political discourse. You do not have a right to make the world more Mormon and unless people willing seek you out you do not have a right to thrust your views on them.
That goes the same for every religion, and every belief in general, no matter how logical or illogical they may be.
In the words of George Carlin: "Keep thy religion to thyself."

(37,748 posts)I don't think anyone is arguing that being black is a choice, or that being a Mormon is hereditary. I think the article's main thrust is simply that both demographics still have irrelevant stigmas attached to them-- regardless of whether being in one or the other demographic is a choice or not...

Are they any more discriminated against than say Muslims or Jehovah's witnesses?
Hey folks they can pull this stuff out of their ass if necessary.

(10,437 posts)The survey asks what people think about Mormons and blacks, not about how tough of a time they have or how much power they have, or even if the prejudice is warranted.
I yield to few in my low opinion of the Mormon religion (and in fact any exclusionary, evangelical, legislatively active religion), but I can still readily agree that some people react with unthinking negativity towards them as people. I couldn't give a rat's if one married into the family, and would actually be MORE likely to trust a devout Mormon on a personal level than most others. I am not I hope then too prejudiced against Mormons although I know and see the same stereotyping as most. What you think of the religion anf what you think of the people, and especially whether you can accept that others are biased against them, are entirely different questions.
