Theresa May flies into a storm as state visit is overshadowed by President Donald Trump's extreme policy announcements

PM’s big moment turns into PR disaster

Joe Watts In Philadelphia @JoeWatts_

Theresa May’s historic visit to America was mired in controversy tonight as Donald Trump’s presidency was rocked by a wave of fresh scandals.

As the Prime Minister touched down in Philadelphia she indicated that the UK could stop sharing intelligence with the CIA after Mr Trump gave his backing to waterboarding in tackling Isis.

Asked about British rules stating that British spies cannot work with nations that use torture, Ms May said: “We condemn torture and my view on that won't change – whether I’m talking to you or talking to the President.”

Her rebuke to Mr Trump came as his fledgling presidency was hit by a series of new controversies, including:

Do you believe he means it?

Even if she is not entirely sincere (which I have no reason to doubt) simply saying it… “says something…”

It's reminiscent of when Thatcher would don her irritated governess look whenever embarrassing figures like South African President P.W. Botha came calling - only to do her darndest to shield Apartheid South Africa from sanctions and help them get around them once they were imposed.

"Were it not for Reagan and Thatcher," Botha observed at the time, "we'd be alone in the world."

Whenever DJT opens his mouth - it's a lie. Theresa May as far as I am concerned is Mother Teresa compared to DJT. And I don't care for her politics because she's a bloody Tory - even though she is a liberal Tory.

I think she's doing what she has to in order to keep the "special relationship" going. Nothing more, nothing less. The UK voted for Brexit, and she's got the job of steering the UK through it - even though she is a Remainer. I think she's just keeping all doors open in the national interest of the UK.

By choosing to meet with only one political party the British Prime Minister effectively shit in her own mess kit.

May went to Republican territory for a reason. She wanted to talk to Trumpy for a reason. My guess is that her country is very nervous about Trumpy and she wanted to suss him out first hand. She's concerned about his behavior with Putin. She wants to give him a little talk. She wants to tell him that Putin is a dangerous fellow, and she wants to put Trumpy on notice that she and the western powers are watching. I think it's that serious.

We may not like where May's apparent priorities are, but you can bet the farm that she's not about to let the UK's guard down, and she wants Trumpy to play it straight. She'll tell him so. This could end badly for Trumpy. She could end up going back to London and tell her government that Trumpy's not who he appears to be. It could happen that she's not optimistic about any kind of trade deal between the two countries because of Trumpy's instability. She might want to delay or nix Brexit because of Trumpy. There still has to be Parliamentary approval of Brexit before it can be implemented.

The UK expects presidents to be of much higher quality than Trumpy. May could view him as half-cocked and batty.

...to be very careful with Putin, and to support NATO in extending support to Baltic States and other small neighbors of Russia. She also emphasized that Brexit did not mean Britain doesn't support the EU as a means of keeping Europe strong and united.
