London to hold 'biggest protest ever' against US President

Source: Independent

Campaigners are urging people to stage “the biggest protest ever” in London, when Donald Trump comes to the UK on a state visit later this year.

Anti-Trump campaigners took to social media to call for a demonstration in the streets of the capital after Theresa May revealed the US President had accepted an invitation from the Queen.

A Facebook event has already been created by the organisation Stand Up To Racism to protest Mr Trump’s visit to the UK.

-snip-

Stop the War, People’s Assembly and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) are also backing the event and are urging people to “oppose Trump's racism, sexism and bigotry”.

There were unabashedly white supremacist Tory figures like longtime MP Enoch Powell, and posters like this one from the 1964 election (which they narrowly lost):

But even more mainstream Conservatives like Thatcher often betrayed their own bigotry - even at the cost of British standing abroad sometimes.

She famously shielded Apartheid South Africa from sanctions and helped them get around once the U.S. imposed them (over Reagan's veto, you'll recall). David Cameron, then a young party hack, actually started his Tory career agitating in favor of the Apartheid regime - "Hang Mandela" posters and all.

"Were it not for Reagan and Thatcher," Botha (the last hard-line Apartheid President) observed at the time, "we'd be alone in the world."

Botha and Maggie: so happy together.[/center]

She set Trumpy up for the big surprise. She is lending legitimacy to the world-wide hatred of Trumpy by setting up the conditions for a huge protest. Trumpy can't refuse the invitation, and now he can't dismiss the hatred. And May is all the more pleased that she met with Trumpy and told him how he should behave BEFORE Trumpy talks to his master, Vlad Putin. (May, at first blush, is WAY smarter than Trumpy, and can play him like a dog on a leash.) So Trumpy is in a politically strategic vice. He's being squeezed. He has to decide who will control him: Putin or western Europe. He MUST make a public declaration and he MUST make policy. He's lately been signaling equivocation: thinking about lifting SOME of the sanctions. But he surely won't do so without exposing his "loyalties" (read: vulnerabilities) to Putin.

Christopher Steele was right. He deserves our admiration and thanks. Trumpy is being blackmailed by Putin.

They have a history of being attacked on their own territory. They know the meaning of vulnerability. They are more accustomed to thinking many steps ahead. And they all know that Trumpy is a danger to himself and others and he's a lightning rod for political unrest. They invite him to the UK when the western world is ablaze with anti-Trumpy protests. The UK establishment is not fond of Brexit and this will give their citizens a chance to protest both Brexit and Trumpy. Conflating the two is exactly what the UK establishment would have ordered.

(especially after how she appeared to like the Obamas so much).

In a very regal way, of course.

If nothing else she can always use her age as an excuse to skip meeting him and send a lesser royal to do it. Perhaps someone who is like 50th in line for the throne.

(I have an 94 year old aunt who says age is a great excuse to get out of doing something you don't want to do, no one dares question you.)

As a party appointed PM who was not elected by the people she is already on thin ice. If she thinks she can play Maggie Thatcher to Trump's Ronald Reagan she needs to remember how that all ended.
